The Impact Arts Factory Salon

A chance for creatives from Dennistoun to network and develop ideas.

Impact Arts would like to invite artists and designers living and working in Dennistoun to our first salon event. The Factory Salon will bring together artists from all disciplines to enjoy wine, canapes and entertainment in a comfortable, informal setting.

Impact Arts is a community arts charity who employ freelance artists to work within the local community to enable people to change their lives using the arts. Dennistoun has a vibrant creative community and the Factory Salon will enable us to share ideas, network and inspire each other.

Dennistoun Photographers Exhibition

The Dennistoun Photographers group are holding their end of year exhibition of photographs at The Briggait, 141 Bridgegate, Glasgow G1 5HZ. The exhibition opens 16th December until 19th December from 10am until 5pm with a preview on 13th December from 6pm until 8pm.

The library will be closed on the 18th November 2013 for essential maintenance and will reopen on the 30th November.

David Shrigley Becomes Patron of Impact Arts Project: The Young Gallery

Glasgow based 2013 Turner Prize nominee David Shrigley has given a major boost to Scotland's future generation of artists. Shrigley has announced his support for Impact Arts project The Young Gallery, Scotland's first gallery dedicated to showcasing children’s artwork. The Young Gallery works with children in Glasgow's East End to give them a quality arts experience that will have a positive impact on a range of factors including their capacity for learning, their ability to share, their health and wellbeing and even their family relationships.

David Shrigley is nominated for this year's Turner Prize, with the winner announced on Monday 2nd December 2013. He is passionate about supporting the Glasgow based project having lived and worked in the city since gaining his Bachelors in Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art in 1991. His backing is a major boost to The Young Gallery, who recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to give the unique arts venue a sustainable future.

Roslea Drive Fire

On early Sunday morning 27 October 2013 around 1:15am DST fire, ambulance and police services attended to a serious fire to a block of flats in Roslea Drive in Dennistoun. The street was closed off at Hillfoot Street and Whitehill Street and residents cars were manually cleared from the vicinity to let the firefighting crews in. All residents from the building were evacuated with no casualties. Fire crew remained to dampen down the building where the roof and upper floor were badly damaged.

Food Bank

The Everlasting Arms Ministry are starting a food bank in Dennistoun at the church at 12 Whitehill St. This will run on the 1st Saturday of the month 2-4pm. They are looking for donations of non-perishable foods and also to advertise this to those who may need to use these services. Food donations can be given to the church hall 7.30-9pm Wednesdays and 10-2pm Sundays.

Dennistoun Community Council: June 2013 Update

Dennistoun Community Council exists to ascertain, coordinate and express the views of the wider community.

What local issues should we be focusing on in the second half of 2013?

You are warmly invited to attend any of the following community council meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 7pm to let us know about the topics that matter to you now, and in the coming months:

• 11th June - Whitehill Secondary
• 9th July - Haghill Park Primary
• 13th August - Haghill Park Primary
• 10th September - Whitehill Secondary
• 8th October AGM - Whitehill Secondary
• 12th November - Whitehill School
• 10th December - Whitehill School

Our recent past activities include the following:

• Organised the annual Dennistoun Treasure Hunt for primary age children.
• Begun an investigation into various factoring practices that have been causing concern for local residents.
• Started work on a 'map and app project' that will promote the things that Dennistoun has to offer to residents and visitors alike.
• Submitted a detailed consultation response arguing against the alleged possible closure of Duke Street railway station.
• Collated extensive information on numerous potholes which have since been remedied.
• Developed a formal Action Plan detailing aims of specific activities to focus on.
• Hosted a Big Lunch picnic event in Buffalo Bill Square where neighbours came together to meet each other.
• Held public meetings on local public transport, with representatives from First Glasgow and SPT.
• Responded to various planning and licensing applications submitted to Glasgow City Council.
• Created the Save Our Sorting Office campaign in repsonse to the proposed closure of the Cubie Street depot (which did indeed close, but we succeeded in pressuring Royal Mail into being more open about the changes, and the issue was subsequently raised at council and parliament level in order that future closure proposals are made much more transparent).
• Supported Market Gallery and Dennistoun Diggers as associate members.
• Promoted a range of local projects, events, and initiatives organised by organisations in Dennistoun and the adjacent Glasgow East End area.

Simply Swap - Duke St's Fashion Exchange
Grand opening of Glasgow's first fashion exchange, Simply Swap, in 439 Duke St on Friday 12th April where you can revamp your wardrobe for free!

The shop offers the opportunity to exchange good condition clothing and fashion items for others "new-to-you" and reducing the amount of unwanted clothing that is thrown out. As part of Playbusters Grow Green with Glasgow's East End programme, funded by the Climate Challenge Fund, the shop has been designed, decorated and will be run by a team of dedicated volunteers.

The shop will also be a space to learn about waste reduction and recycling, take part in creative workshops and get energy saving advice. This is a family friendly experience with womenswear, menswear and childrenswear available so the whole family can freshen up their look.

The shop will be open Thursdays 9.30am - 5pm and Fridays 9.30am - 3pm.

Local Baker Opens New Shop

Baking For You is expanding their bakery business to the south side of Glasgow. They are opening a new takeaway shop in the Gorbals area in April 2013. The shop will sell hot and cold filled rolls and sandwiches as well as their popular range of freshly baked sausage rolls, pies, pastries, cakes, cookies and doughnuts.

Baking For You recently went through a complete refit of their bakery in Cumbernauld Road and expanded into the premises next door with a new tea room.

Raymond McNeill, proprietor, said: "This is a great opportunity to continue my good business relationships with my neighbour Mr Mirza. He owns Nisa next to my bakery and has a shop in Ballater Street. I feel the new Gorbals is a growing area and I want to offer the people who live and work there our range of quality baked products at a competitive price."

Glasgow City Council and private investors are improving the area and attracting people to move in. There is a new development of flats being built nearby and Strathclyde Distillery, famous for their Chivas Regal brand, is across the road from the shop.

The shop will open 7 days a week from 7am to 4pm and this will change according to customer requirements.

Dennistoun Care Home Supports Baking Competition Hopefuls

Residents of Dennistoun's Golfhill Bupa Care Home are backing Scotland's 2012 Olympian Sally Conway and her JudoScotland colleagues as they swap judo for baking to compete in a new national competition.

The judo specialists are using their 2012 fighting spirit to battle for the top prize in the Bupa Bake Off competition that is running until 8 March, starting with the Scottish heats. As well as recognising the best of baking talent across Great Britain, the competition aims to raise awareness of loneliness amongst elderly people who are living on their own, and raise valuable funds for WRVS.

The winning recipe will become the official "sweet bake" of Communi-tea Week (15 - 21 April), when Bupa's care homes invite elderly people from their local community to join them for a cuppa.

Staff at Golfhill Bupa Care Home support Sally and her colleagues at JudoScotland every year on the annual charity judo competition in Ravenscraig so they're more than happy to extend this to their entries to the Bupa Bake Off. Susan MacDonald, manager of Golfhill Bupa Care Home, said: "It's fantastic that the girls are getting behind the baking competition and doing their bit - baking and sharing - to reach out to elderly people. We're really hoping that they encourage more people to enter, vote or donate to WRVS."

When Sally's not training, she's perfecting her culinary skills in JudoScotland's baking club. Her Bake-Off entry,  a Florentine White Chocolate Cheesecake with a Blueberry Sauce, is up against cakes from two of her JudoScotland colleagues - a Chocolatey Gift from Frania Gillen-Buchert and a Zesty Cake Bake from Kirsty Fowler.

To enter the competition, baking enthusiasts simply post a photograph and details about their recipe on-line at bupa.co.uk/bakeoff before 8 March, for the public to vote. The Scottish recipe with the highest number of votes will compete against winners from the five other heats covering Great Britain, in a live bake-off judged by well-known TV baker Brendan Lynch.

Murder Inquiry as Man Found Dead in Dennistoun Flat
A murder inquiry is under way following the death of Paul Cunningham 35, found in his flat in Aberdour Street, Dennistoun around 6.15 pm on 11th February 2013.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Carey said: "He was last seen in the local area around 11 am on Friday 8th February by a friend."

"Officers are also working to gather as much information as possible on Mr Cunningham, including details on his lifestyle and the people he associated with. I would ask anyone who knew him and who has not yet spoken to police, to contact us as they may have information that will help our inquiry."

Market Gallery Looking for New Committee Members
Market Gallery is a contemporary art gallery based in Duke Street, Dennistoun. They are looking for volunteers where it is not necessary to have an artistic background but that you can demonstrate professionalism and have a keen interest in the arts. The position will offer a unique experience in the field and applicants should be available for meetings every Monday evening as well as being available to work in the gallery one day a week.
