Golfhill Care Home, in Dennistoun, has just scooped the top prize in a national gardening competition!

The amateur horticulturists entered the 'tallest sunflower' category and beat off 36 care homes across the UK with their impressive entry which stretched to over 8ft tall.

The judges for the annual 'Advinia in Bloom' competition  were very impressed by Golfhill's entry and their trophy and prize vouchers will be arriving shortly.

Gardener, Sinead O'Reilly, said "We planted the sunflower from seed in early March and started off in our greenhouse before moving outdoors when the milder weather arrived. The Residents and the Activity Coordinators helped to look after it and we all enjoyed watching it grow. On the day of the competition entry it reached 250 centimeters which is about 8ft 2 inches"

Resident Betty Fryars Aged 88 (Pictured) couldn't believe how big the sunflower was when she stood next to it and commented that it was even taller than the roof!

Golfhill are planning to use their prize winnings to purchase items to enhance their gardens. They already have volunteers who come into the Care Home regularly and assist with garden maintenance. Sinead added "The gardens are such a peaceful and tranquil area for the Residents to enjoy and they love to get involved and help out too."

If anyone would like to volunteer to assist Golfhill in their gardening endeavours then please contact Paul at crm.scotland@advinia.com
