Baking For You on a Roll
Baking For You at 400 Cumbernauld Road and facing Alexandra Park is a long established and popular bakery for the Dennistoun area. They have seen continued growth in recent years with the expansion of their premises to include a traditional Glasgow tearoom opposite Alexandra Park and in supplying their baked goods to other businesses in and around Glasgow.
To provide further outlets for their bakery produce they opened a takeaway at 490 Ballater Street Gorbals opposite the Strathclyde Distillery in April 2013, a takeaway at 321 Hallhill Road Barlanark in January 2015, a takeaway at 193 Springburn Way Springburn in November 2015 and their latest endeavour is a new shop in Castlemilk due to open in February 2016.
The Castlemilk shop was originally a butchers and Ardenglen Housing Association were keen to see this service continue for local residents. Baking For You proposed to sell both butcher and baker produce. Their proposal was accepted and along with their own bakery produce they will be selling butcher produce from their regular supplier, C & C Meats, a family run business based in Blochairn Market and established for almost 30 years.

Alexandra Park Management Plan
Glasgow City Council's Land and Environmental Services is carrying out a consultation on how Alexandra Park in Dennistoun will be looked after in the next five years. They would like to hear your views and opinions on the draft Alexandra Park Management Plan so that they can take them into account when completing the final plan. The questionnaire will take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and the consultation will be available until Friday 8th January 2016.
RONAN'S CANCER AWARENESS ROADSHOW WHICH CELEBRATES ITS 500,000 VISITOR ROLLS INTO GLASGOW

POP star Ronan Keating is backing a cancer awareness roadshow launched to help save lives.
Ronan, who lost his mum Marie to breast cancer, is urging Scots to visit a Cancer Research UK cancer awareness roadshow to benefit from free information on how to reduce the risk of cancer, the importance of early diagnosis and to learn more about how to spot cancer sooner. The Scottish Roadshow which is staffed by nurses is set to be at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary on November 24 between 10am and 4pm and at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow on November 25 between 10am and noon.
More than half a million people have now visited the roadshow since its launch in 2006. Run in partnership with the Marie Keating Foundation, founded by Ronan Keating and his family in memory of his mum who died in 1998, the roadshow has visited 200 destinations across the UK. Visitors can have a private conversation with a nurse, take a BMI test to find out whether their weight is within a healthy range, and pick up useful health information. Roadshow staff also provide support to help people make positive changes to their lifestyle and encourage them to go to their GP with any health concerns.
Ronan Keating said "This year we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Cancer awareness roadshow units in the UK.
"It makes this moment even more special to know that we have been able to reach so many people and 500,000 visitors is such an incredible achievement. I am so proud to have seen this partnership grow from strength to strength. I want to say a big thank you to everyone in Ireland and the UK that have supported us in making this possible, and I know that my mother would be proud of what we have achieved."
The Scottish Roadshow was at the 50 Plus Show at the Scottish Expedition Centre, Glasgow on November 11 and 12, where the stand was decked out in balloons to celebrate the UK-wide programme reaching 500,000 visitors - including over 11,000 in Scotland alone this year. The North East, North West and London roadshows also marked the milestone.
Mary Dunlop, Senior Cancer Research UK cancer awareness nurse in Scotland said: "We are very excited to have welcomed over 500,000 visitors to the Cancer Research UK Cancer Awareness Roadshow.
"It allows us to get important information out to people as they go about their busy lives - we are literally on the road to beating cancer. We talk to men and women, young and old - about potentially life-saving small steps we can all take to reduce the risk of cancer and why it's important to seek help if someone has a persistent change to their body. We offer visitors the opportunity to have a private conversation with our nurses. We also invite local health workers onto the roadshow to inform people of health services in their area."

Knowing your body - by getting to know your body and what's normal for you it will be easier to spot any unusual or persistent changes. A change won't usually turn out to be cancer, but if it is something serious then finding it early could make all the difference.
Living a healthy life - being smoke free, drinking less alcohol, eating healthily, watching your weight, being active and being SunSmart can all help to lower the risk of cancer.

City Park Staff get Healthy and Raise Funds for a Good Cause
Staff from Health Rewards, Exsel and City Park Fitness have teamed up to raise funds for ENABLE Scotland and promote a positive health and active attitude in the work place.
Starting Monday 7th September they will participate in Friendly Food Fortnight by giving up junk food, sweets and treats for two weeks and will pledge £1 to ENABLE Scotland every time they break the rules.
Directors of the company's involved have ensured it is a win win situation by pledging £5 to ENABLE Scotland for every member of their staff that eat healthy options. Around 40 staff will be taking part.
The event coincides with National Fitness Day on the 9th September with UK Active and they are taking advantage of the day to push the whole building at City Park to get away from their desks and active at lunchtime with one of four free fitness classes taking place between 12.30pm and 1.30pm. With over 2,000 people in the building they are expecting to have a great turn out.

Alexandra Park Sports Hub
A new community sports amenity was officially opened by Paul Martin MSP and Bailie Elaine McDougall in Alexandra Park on Wednesday 1st July 2015. The Alexandra Park Sports Hub will provide sports activities for all the family including putting, bowling, cycling and tennis. It can be accessed from the Sannox Gardens entrance. The hub replaces the old bowling green building that has been extensively refurbished.
The Alexandra Park Sports Hub is run by Milnbank Community Enterprises with support from Glasgow Life and the Big Lottery. Milnbank Community Enterprises was established to focus on Milnbank Housing Association's strategic objective of "Leading in the social and economical regeneration of the association's area of operation, through promotion of and participation in wider action activities."
Nextbike bike hire comes to Dennistoun
Nextbike provide a bike hire service where you can hire one of their 20,000+ bikes from any one of their stations in 14 countries. They have stations in many UK cities including Glasgow and one is set up in Dennistoun at the corner of Duke Street at Belgrove Street making a total of 41 stations in Glasgow.
Annual Subscription for regular use is £60 with the first 30 minutes of every ride free, then 50 pence for every additional 30 minutes up to a maximum of £5 for the day. They also have a Regular Fare designed for casual use where you pay £10 for your starting credit and each hire costs £1.00 for 30 minutes up to a maximum of £10 for the day.
Big Plans for Alexandra Park
Cruikshank Fountain will be restored this summer with return of Cherub
Glasgow City Council invited the public to an information day at Alexandra Park on Saturday 14th March 2015. A marquee was set up within the park near the main gates. Plans were on display and Park Officers provided information on works and development being undertaken over the next 18 months.
The planned improvement works include upgrading all seven entrances to the park. Footpaths will be repaired and resurfaced where previously patched. The Saracen Fountain, previously repaired and painted in 2000 at a cost of £22000, will have major restoration.
The cherub that is presently missing from the Cruikshank Fountain at the main gates is expected to return this summer when restoration is completed to the iron fountain and plinth.
The ponds will be managed with further shrubbery added to the boat pond to encourage wildlife. Trees will be pruned back as part of long term management that better serves the park.
Additions include a running circuit and children's play facility. It is also hoped to develop a Friends of the Park group where Park Officers can provide advice and guidance with all stages of the project.
Gallowgate Twin Towers Gone by 2016
Demolition work to remove the high rise flats from the Dennistoun skyline is now apace. The 31 storey tower blocks at Whitevale Street and Bluevale Street will be removed floor by floor using a top-down procedure due to the close proximity of streets and properties.
A platform on top of the Bluevale block can clearly be seen. This allows the demolition team to remove walls and floors at that level and as work progresses the platform is lowered to the next level.
The first phase on the Bluevale block will be completed by summer 2015. The second phase on the Whitevale block will begin soon after and expected to finish by 2016.
The Gallowgate Twin Towers were the tallest residential flats when built in 1969 with the Red Road flats being the highest due to them being built on a higher level.
First For Local Kids in Biggest National Group Dance Competition
Pulse is a dance class held in St. Andrews Church Hall on Alexandra Parade. Most of the kids who attend Pulse live or go to school in Dennistoun and the surrounding area. The classes are managed by Jaqueline and Nicola Duffy, an enthusiastic mother and daughter partnership who have big plans for the future of Pulse and their team of talented dancers.
Last year (September, 2014) the Pulse dance team headed for Musselburgh to compete in the Scottish heat of the biggest group dance competition in the UK organised by Dance Design Events. They performed seven dance routines of which three were selected to go forward to the grand finals held at the Blackpool Opera House & Winter Gardens in January this year (2015).
24 Pulse dancers aged between 10 and 25 rehearsed and fund raised to get to the finals. For many of the dancers this was the chance of a lifetime as they experience competing nationally as a team and perform on stage in front of a large audience.
"These kids work so hard and have really bonded with their teachers and each other!" said a Pulse mum.
The Pulse dancers won 1st place in the mixed hip section of "That's Showbiz" Group Dance of the Year and came second overall in the adult age category.
Now the aim for the team is to compete as often as possible and fund raise to open their own studio so that Pulse can get bigger and better!
