Potholes
Dennistoun Community Council posted on the 13/02/2013 12:52:46 PM
According to the Metro today 40% of drivers in Scotland have had their car damaged by potholes. These are epidemic in Glasgow, and we have our share throughout Dennistoun. Glasgow Council should repair these, but to be fair to them, can't do so if they don't know about them. How many of us use the Pothole Hotline (0800 373635)? It is also suspected that without any easily scrutinised public record of which potholes have been reported it's all too easy to fob off claims for damage. Over the next two weeks Dennistoun Community Council intend to collect a list of potholes in the area, submit their location to the Pothole Hotline, collect a reference number for each pothole reported, and then post these references either on Dennistoun Forum or the Community Council's own webpage (link on the left). The best case scenario would be rapid repairs, but if not, the potholes being a matter of public record, the council would be liable for claims due to damage or injury after a reasonable period had elapsed. Please supply the location of potholes below, and these can also be on the pavements, not just the roads.

Well you can start with the carriage way in both directions on Duke St. west of the Bellgrove St. junction down as far as Melbourne St. - as both a cyclist and pedestrian I find it treacherous. Whole thing needs resurfacing due to potholes, uneven surface, cracks ... I used to report damage to the roads via www.fixmystreet.com which was pretty effective at getting it reprted but the standard of repairs ...

I've reported potholes around Dennistoun on the gov's report a pothole site - they may damage cars but some can be positively lethal for cyclists; I went over a huge one about 20cm deep, 1m x 1m on Cumbernauld road a couple of weeks ago, it was dark and so badly lit I didn't see it until it was too late to avoid. It was all I could do to stay on the bike and survive with one buckled wheel. It was where they had been working on the road previously and they just didn't patch over that section when they cleared out. Luckily they have done that now.
Sunken drains / badly repaired drains are a problem on Cumbernauld Road/ Alexandra Park Street.

I've also been told about sunken drain on Duke St opposite Annbank St, the pothole coming out of the car park at Iceland on Whitehill St, the left turn onto Duke St from Westercraigs, and several on Gallowgate heading into town.

Still 2 huge craters on cumbernauld Road, next to the bus stop at the off licence and small DIY hardware store. It's just at the edge of the bus stop.
I see some of the holes on Todd st had finally been sorted, that was rattling my car to bits every time I went down to Asda!

Thanks for the updates, and it's nice to know some have been filled in. I've now also been informed of the centre of the street by the junction of Onslow Drive and Craigpark, the junctions of Garfield, Bathgate and Whitevale Streets with Duke St, the traffic crossing on Duke St at Garfield St, and the junction of Garthland Drive with Armadale St.

It is now possible to report potholes online via a link at glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=3404, although this does require registering with the Glasgow Council website for some reason. It also requires an arbitrary judgement regarding the level of injury or damage to vehicle. I'd not consider this element of prioritising appropriate. I've reported all the above potholes, including the Iceland/Co-Op pothole on Whitehill St which hadn't been fixed as of late afternoon yesterday. The resulting list and reference numbers will be posted online at the Dennistoun Community Council website (link on left) sometime later this week. Am happy to keep reporting any new ones that arise, and would estimate two weeks a reasonable amount of time to have repaired everything reported so far.

I would be hugely grateful if you were able to report the significant pothole developing on kennyhill square as you turn in at the Lea rig, completely unavoidable for anyone living in the street or going to the St rollox bowling club. The road in general around square/eastercraigs is in poor condition and gets neglected. I think because its not really a through route to anywere, but heavily used by people visiting the park, pub, chippy or bowling club.
many thanks for your help with this!!!

I have now reported all the potholes above, plus several others, generating 128 e-mails from Glasgow Council Roads department in response. According to the e-mails each pothole will be assessed within five days, scheduled into a work plan and prioritised according to severity. As previously noted, this is based on the unreasonable expectation of my ability to accurately assess the likely injury or damage that could result from the pothole. I'm also offered the opportunity to offer a feedback rating, presumably on the basis that the council have acknowledged the report, as anything else is premature. The final sentence of each e-mail is worth passing on in full: "We hope that you have benefited from our service and work with us to create the ultimate citizen experience." The full list of what's been reported is now up on the Dennistoun Community Council website should anyone require confrimation at a later date, and will be updated as more potholes are reported.

Some of the reported potholes have now been fixed. In some cases this has dealt with the problem. In others where the solution is merely to fill the holes and ignore the surrounding deteriorating surface new potholes will develop in months.

I today took a walk around two thirds of the 32 potholes reported a month ago to Glasgow City Council. Very few have been repaired. A month seems a reasonable amount of time to expect the problem to have been dealt with, and would suggest that anyone whose car is damaged due to one of the reported potholes listed on the Dennistoun Community Council website would be able to claim for damages.

I have reported a load of potholes again today. I doubt any will be repaired though as this is not the first time I have reported them.
