Elaine C Smith and Dennis Canavan in Dennistoun

Indygal posted on the 15/06/2013 6:16:59 PM

Hi,

I'm one of the local co-ordinators for Yes - the pro Independence campaign. We've got a public meeting on Wednesday 26th June at Dennistoun New Parish Church, 7pm.

If you've any questions or just want to hear a bit more about it or pick up information leaflets please come along.

The actress Elaine C Smith and former Labour MP and MSP Dennis Canavan are the main speakers but we've also got a 16 yr old first time voter from Haghill, someone from the Jimmy Reid Foundation and a speaker from Africans for an Independent Scotland.

And there will be info stalls from Labour for Independence, Women for Independence and Radical Independence. Plus entertainment and refreshments.

Everyone is welcome and it's being organised by Dennistoun folk. The only speaker without a specific connection to Dennistoun is Dennis Canavan but maybe he's named after the place :-) And he is an inspirational speaker.

One last thing - we're kicking off by asking folk in the audience if they want to ask a question or say a few words. So YOU will set the tone, and the speakers will respond.

Hope to see loads of Dennistoun folk on the night. 7pm Wed 26th June. Dennistoun New Parish CHurch, 9 Armadale St.

(BTW we're just hiring the hall from the church, they're completely neutral.)

Sounds like a really great event. Thanks very much for organising it :)

Agree, I hope you can win over some hearts and minds - people here have complained of a lack of information.

I am already voting yes :)

Hi everyone, thanks for that and sorry, didn't realise there were replies. Too used to being on Facebook and getting notifications :-)

I hope you can both come along. At the end of the day Yes Scotland is a grassroots community campaign and we will win the referendum if we all convince each other. Celebrities and politicians can help or hinder but ordinary people are the ones who will be most convincing.

I think the problem with the lack of information is not that it's not there because it is, but that it's hard to get that message across. The press are not exactly supportive so we rely on each other but we also rely on events like this. No question is out of bounds, they are happy to answer anything.

And we're doing teas and coffees. Oh and we've musicians and a Wish Tree - you basically just write on a piece of card what you would put in a written constitution, we hang them up and later in the evening we read some of them out.

Look forward to seeing everybody on Wednesday.

I was fully intending to come along to this and then I read the rest of the leaflet. Why oh why must everything connected to Yes Scotland be entertained by " a selection of fiddlers" etc. Why not just have tartan curtains and shortbread and Nessie in a kilt. Scotland has other music and I love my heritage dearly, but if your trying to draw people into a future then surely something other than tradional music is more appropriate and will help fill the hall. It would have been better to have nothing. And yes I know they are being supportive and giving their time for free but you could have said no. "Let's all get up and do a Gay Gordons" sigh

The fiddlers will be in with the teas and coffees in another room so you don't actually have to listen to them. We also have a Jamaican guy singing a calypso about Independence and some people might think that's not their cup of tea. There really is no way of finding something that everyone will like but I would just say that tonight is not about the entertainment, it's about the issue facing us next year. I also don't know what kind of biscuits there will be but I haven't banned shortbread so you never know ....

I would hope the Jamaican singer does not use his home country as a shining light for independence as it has been a bit of a disaster since gaining independence in 1962 and has had one of the highest murder rates in the world for many years .They have produced some world class athletes and sportsmen and sportswomen and excel in many sports .

Whatever problems Jamaica may or may not have had since taking control of it's own destiny, there is absolutely zero likelihood of the country opting to give up it's independence in favour of handing sovereignty to a Westminster government.

The exact same truth goes for Ireland when you consider it's recent issues.

Another country, Iceland, has had similar short term banking troubles of late but took decisive action and is now enjoying a period of growth. And no sign at any point of it wishing to go back to it's early 20th century status in re-joining Denmark.

We can throw around comparisons between countries on individually isolated and non-representative scare tactic criteria all day long. But the fact remains that these countries have achieved a position of full independence, and they aren't even coming close to giving it up -they value their independence because they know how important it is.

Was hoping for some posts regarding how this event was attended and what was discussed. Anybody go?

Wellpark, be interested to hear your thoughts on the link between any problems any particular country might have (you say Jamaica, I say pick a country because we ALL have our problems), and being Independent.

RT Bruce - we've videos of all the speakers and a lot of the people who attended so I'll let you know when we've got it all online. If you're on Facebook, some of them are on the Yes Provan page but we'll put them all in the one place when we get the time.

It was a great night. 162, possibly more people turned up which I think broke the record for a local launch. Lots of good questions and loads of people hung around after to chat and offer to help with campaigning. Look out for them on your doorstep soon :-)

To clarify on what Indygal said, the facebook.com/YesProvan page has videos and follow ups to the event. No need to log in or be signed up facebook to see what's there.
