It was actually a practice event for next year's Commonwealth Games. Do you think you can through that kind of event together? This was a trial event to prep for the Commonwealth road race. This is so they can learn and prevent similar issues next year. The itinerary will be published next month for the Commonwealth Games but prepared for at least 2 road events e.g. the bicycle road race and the marathon.

" a cycle race that no other city wanted to host? " through their city centres with road blocks ,that is correct .As for the 30,000 people ... take that with a pinch of salt , paper figures are easily manipulated .It was not just shoppers who were inconvenieced, there were many trying  get to and from work , and others on call etc .Some thought it was worthwhile but going on actually being there and seeing and hearing first hand the complaints , I beg to differ .I have not heard of anyone who actually went to see it .It's all a matter of opinion which we are all entitled to.

a cycle race that no other city wanted to host?

i've heard it said that there was unprecedented interest in hosting it from towns and cities throughout the country.

either way, there were record crowds of 30,000 people who presumably thought this rare opportunity was worth a little disruption to the normal shopping routine that takes place on 363 other days throughout the year.

highlights from the biggest single day road race on the british cycling calendar can be seen here for the next two or three weeks: www.itv.com/itvplayer/british-national-elite-road-race-championship

I am gutted to have missed this! I was away at a wedding but saw friends' photos and videos after, and they all had a great time watching it. Apparently 30,000 people turned out to watch, am sure there would have been some benefit for hotels and restaurants. It's great that Glasgow continues to support sporting achievement and gives our young people something to aspire to. Hopefully there will a knock-on effect in terms of people engaging in sport and the health and well-being of future generations.

No comparison overall between Commonwealth Games and a cycle race that no other city wanted to host in their city centres causing the chaos that ensued .Visitors and their spending welcome .

Well we better cancel the Commonwealth Games then. Don't want those pesky visitors all over the town!

I am not " fretting " merely passing an opinion and information that many others , including those manning the barriers expressed .I also walk daily so that is no problem either .If you had been involved in the traffic confusion and seen the anger and frustration caused , you may have a different view .It also caused severe delays on the M8 at the Royal and backwards towards Easterhouse with the slip roads off being backed up .As for the income to Glasgow , that is debatable when compared to the lost income with people going elsewhere.I read on another forum of many using Braehead , Siverburn and other outside of Glasgow centres because of this .ONE poster spent over £2,000 on TV / electrical gear outwith Glasgow .Standing on High St and speaking to others first hand , they "could see it far enough " was a great quote from one person .

Events like this bike race bring much needed income to Glasgow and it is to the Council's credit that they acquired such an event.
So stop fretting and park up for a day !
