Timber Repair / Plaster

A piece of my living room ceiling cornice (above the bay window) has came away. On closer inspection I think the timber behind it (which runs between floors) has been damaged by water or moisture and has rotten. I am interested to know if anyone has any experience of getting this kind of thing repaired and any decent companies / tradesmen to use. The room will need replastered and I know of a decent local plasterer, however I am more concerned about getting the timber replaced or repaired. Any assistance or knowledge would be appreciated?

If you are in a factored building I would contact the factor first because the buildings insurance policy should cover the watertightness of the fabric of the building and that's the first thing that should be addressed otherwise the wood will never dry out and the cornice won't stay in place. (I'm assuming that the water has been getting in from outside rather than internally, although I guess it's possible an upstairs neighbour has a radiator under their bay window which is leaking.) Â Once that issue has been addressed then let the wood dry and get hold of the plaster specialist. Â I'm sorry I can't recommend anyone; I did have a piece of cornice put back in place myself, but that was 10 years ago and I can't remember who did it. (Also there were no underlying issues to deal with first.)
