BT nightmare
Pat posted on the 24/08/2013 2:10:16 PM
This Thursday my Internet stopped working. After half an hour on the phone to BT I was none the wiser, holding on go a promise that they would phone me back on Tuesday as its a bank holiday in England... This morning I got a call from a BT open reach man. Turns out he was here to switch me to talk talk!!! I hadn't ordered talk talk but my neighbour had given them my house number (without the actual flat number). Within ten minutes my phone was cut off and I've now spent the morning on my mobile to BT trying to get re-connected. My question is, can I just switch to another provider? BT have offered to start another contract but can't connect me until the 11th of September and they're not exactly cheap...

Pat, im not entirely sure this is the correct forum to be asking for advise on this?Unless theres maybe someone who works for either company?

Try Ofcom for advice. This page of their website should be helpful in your situation - www.consumers.ofcom.org.uk/tell-us/telecoms/changing-provider/

Thanks Malarki, turns out its called 'slamming' Where one provider takes over your phone line without notice... After complaining BT instantly sent me a message telling me it was going to happen... Somewhat insulting really.
Ps the reason I started this thread was to see if anyone had any ideas and to warn the good people of dennistoun and beyond about this issue. Mind you not much I can do now as neither BT or Talk Talk seem to want to talk to me now. Next step, Citizens Advice...

Sorry Pat, that probably was a bit rude of me. Awful its happened, and awful it CAN happen.

Pat, I had never heard of "slamming" till I read your posts. I googled the word and found out a lot more about it. It's a disgrace that it can be done. I don't know if you're entitled to compensation for your inconvenience and distress but I think you deserve to be. Terrible.

Hey Anon, no problem, I'm sure these forums can go off topic pretty quickly. It seems the problem is across the UK. It also seems that there is little anyone can do to prevent it. One of the many people that I have spoken to at BT said it is particularly bad in Scotland because of our 'funny address system'. I must say I'm appalled at the treatment I've had and have been fobbed off and hung up on several times now. I'd like to use this an opportunity to leave BT for their shoddy treatment of me but they said that despite completely cutting me off I would still have to pay £75 to leave them!!! They said it wasn't their fault that they had cut me off!!!

Definitely get on to offcom and tell BT and talk talk (if you ever manage to speak to them)
