Recess Conversion/Layout Change

PMC posted on the 28/10/2013 7:09:55 PM

My flat has a tiny wee scullery kitchen off of the back room and a recess cupboard off my livingroom and an open recess in the back room. I'm thinking of getting it all knocked about to give me an internal kitchen and generally improved layout. Anyone had any experience of doing this, rough costs and any recommendations of who to use to do the works and who to avoid?

we have done exactly that, turning internal part (recesses) into bathroom and making larger kitchen from old bathroom/scullery and creating 2nd bedroom.  it was pretty pricey mainly because if you have to create a doorway from hall into new internal room you will need warrant as steel works are required (think our bathroom could hold up the whole building as its complete overkill) and think we needed beam when we removed dividing wall between recesses.  think came in at 8k from start to finish.  Cant remember who we used for steel works but sure i can dig out old info.

Thanks mc. I didn't give thought to needing a warrant. Good to know. I'd reckoned it would cost about 10k, so I'm probably not too far off the mark then.

I did this too, a few years ago now. You will need good plans to make your building warrant application, as this can hold things up. I was lucky that the internal room had already been created, but I still needed the warrant to move the plumbing into the centre of the flat. It's quite a disruptive job.
