Burglaries in Dennistoun

Anon posted on the 26/11/2013 1:41:58 PM

I recently had my flat, near the bowling club in Dennistoun, during the day, whilst at work. They stole mostly electricals eg laptops etc.  The police said there has been a spate of burglaries in the area.  I just thought I would warn everyone.  We should all be more vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police.

We got a guy from Crockets to come and look at our locks and our close door and give us advise on making our close safer. He was very helpful and we are getting another lock on our close door.

#63 - anon replied on the 12/02/2014 11:36:32 AM

a couple of flats have been broken into on finlay drive in the past week //. Police were round the doors attempting to gather information if anyone had heard anything. utter scumbags, stay vigilant people this issue is not going away!!

#62 - anon replied on the 6/02/2014 11:12:46 PM

what are the police doing about this?

#61 - Concerned replied on the 4/02/2014 10:31:10 AM

I imagine it's some hardcore drug addict that's doing this and he is all weaponed up. I wouldn't want to mess with him if he's not even checking if people are home. Watch out.

#60 - Twecharbeach replied on the 2/02/2014 12:01:51 PM

attempted break-in

On Friday 31st, there was at attempted break in on Onslow
Drive. 3.30 in the afternoon. The guy booted the close door and then tried to kick in the flat door of the ground floor flat.
The couple were in and went to the door and he
ran off. The police are involved & the couple gave
an excellent description.
The fact that he didn't even check to see if anyone
was in is worrying.

Tighten up security in your closes dear people of
Dennistoun!
Be vigilant!

Anon - you have expressed a wise warning about giving out too much information on the forum which could be used by the wrong people. Keep safe.

#58 - anon replied on the 16/01/2014 2:18:56 PM

Hi worried_1,
It was around 4pm on christmas eve, which again doesn't add up for me that the guys were just 'working' at this time and on that day!
The block of flats is on Craiglea street where the doors were being kicked in.
Call me paranoid but i'm almost reluctant to give out too many details about it on this forum as i'm sure all the door 'workers' in the dennistoun area keep tabs on what the latest is on this forum!!

#57 - denny lady replied on the 15/01/2014 10:56:24 PM

thanx for explaining that, i had never heard about 101, till i read it on this forum.
thanx again for your explanation

#56 - Worried_1 replied on the 15/01/2014 9:39:14 PM

Anon. What time was this on Christmas Eve? Do you stay in Craiglea or was that where the doors were being kicked in?

#55 - The Mentalist replied on the 15/01/2014 9:38:54 PM

So vandalism of public property is not a crime?

#54 - gg replied on the 15/01/2014 6:16:23 PM

101 is the number to call when you want to contact your local police in England, Wales or Scotland - when it’s less urgent than a 999 call. 101 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

When should I use 101?

You should call 101 to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response. For example, if:

    Your car has been stolen
    Your property has been damaged
You suspect drug use or dealing in your neighbourhood

Or to:

    Report a minor traffic collision
Give the police information about crime in your area
Speak to  the police about a general enquiry

You should always to call 999 when it is an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, someone suspected of a crime is nearby, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.

What about nuisance or environmental issues?

You should continue to contact your local council about general issues in your area like:

    Dog fouling
    Abandoned vehicles
    Dumping and fly tipping
    Vandalism of public property

#53 - denny lady replied on the 15/01/2014 1:16:23 AM

please could you explain what the 101 number is and what it does, thanx

#52 - anon replied on the 14/01/2014 9:26:08 PM

It was on craigielea street. We called the 101 number and the police were there within 5 mins of the call.

#51 - anon _l replied on the 14/01/2014 6:01:44 PM

Is be surprised joiners working on Christmas eve as well. Glad you've let everyone know though so we can keep an eye on "builders"

#50 - gg replied on the 14/01/2014 5:58:16 PM

this sounds very suspicious especially as they tried 3 different doors before gaining access (and also kicking down the door). as you say, i do hope the police double checked the workman story. which street did this happen in?

#49 - Anon replied on the 14/01/2014 4:21:57 PM

On Christmas Eve we noticed the flats behind us being broken into. I could see them physically kicking in the doors then using crowbars. One had on a high vis jacket and the other a hoody, baseball cap and scarf across his face, after trying two doors down he then gained access to the upstairs flat. We phoned the police who came out and confronted them. We then got a call to say that they had been workmen working on the doors. Hmmm. Workmen who use there legs to break down doors. I hope the police double checked everything because I found it very odd. So beware of men possibly posing as joiners working on doors. It could have been a genuine reason and they were maybe gaining access to property that had squatters are they were gha buildings but just thought I should write this incase it wasn't. :)

#48 - anon replied on the 11/01/2014 8:02:05 PM

Hi frillydog how do u disable the service button? Would be the best idea all round as long as all neighbours agree with it.

#47 - frillydog replied on the 9/01/2014 12:03:27 PM

Hi,
You can disable to service button on the door entry system, it is annoying for the postman but keeps thing more secure.

#46 - denny lady replied on the 3/01/2014 8:11:51 PM

they say that most burglaries happen between 9am-4pm, so timers, etc, anything that will fool a burglar to think you are in, to start using its a small price to pay

Re: Burglaries in Dennistoun
message: Hi, I was the original Anon who started the thread  I have not read it for a while.  It is encouraging to read that everyone wants  to try and stop the burglaries.  My flat is on Golfhill Drive and was burgled during the day on 28th November.  It is shocking to hear that the incidents are still ongoing.  I think the only way to try and stop them is to keep reporting anything suspicious. Since I reported my burglary I have seen two police walking down Whitehill street once. I would have hoped they would have stepped up the patrols.  Here's hoping they get caught soon.

#44 - anon_l replied on the 20/12/2013 9:58:26 AM

I have found the 101 service to be very helpful and they do seem to care. I worry that I dont see a whole lot of police walking about but i guess they cant be everywhere at once! But yes, please, please, please report anything that makes you feel suspicious

#43 - John replied on the 20/12/2013 7:51:51 AM

The number of burglaries , break ins to cars and robberies have gone through the roof in the Dennistoun area. The police claim that they are still policing the area with a high visibility force especially in the evening. Please make sure that ANY suspicious incidents are ALWAYS reported as that is the only way more beat police will be moved into the area. Also if anyone feels that they want to speak to the police they attend the DCC MEETING every month. You can find the dates on the DCC website or facebook page. Be vigilant and careful.

#42 - anon replied on the 20/12/2013 7:50:28 AM

I think we all need to be more vigilant and if do see suspicious behaviour to let us all know. I am planning on sitting in the car tomorrow for a bit about same time and see if the guy comes back. Sounds like same guy from a similar post that someone has seen floating about for a few days :/ if I see him again tomorrow as I will know the face then I will inform the police.

It's terrible that we don't want to leave our houses but we also don't wanna be in them just incase :( I dunno what I would do. I'd would be so scared especially if wee one is in.

#41 - triangle replied on the 20/12/2013 7:48:59 AM

I urge EVERYONE to report ANYTHING suspicious to the police by calling the police on 101.

You may think that a single suspicion isn't going to change anything. And you'd be right. The burglaries won't stop overnight. And by all means have a discussion on here about it as well, so we can have some collective vigilance. But the most effective way to get policing resources deployed to where they need to be is to get incidents reported.

If you see something suspicious, call 101. If you see something else, call 101 again.

If you see something suspicious and don't call 101, the police attention that the area deserves will not be forthcoming.

Call 101 to register EVERYTHING.

Yet another anon, I'm sorry I really didn't mean it to come across that way and wasn't talking about anyone's post in particular. All I was meaning was a lot of people wear hoodies. People are obviously very concerned and frightened about this, myself included. If you look at my previous posts regarding this you'll see I'm more or less saying the same thing as everyone else so not too sure why you've had be like that. I don't believe I was going off on a tangent, just pointing out that not everyone can be blamed. ANYWAY, anon please don't apologise, you have nothing to be sorry for and by the sounds of it this guy was up to something and if not then not doing a good job of looking innocent. I also agree we need to be a bit more specific when advising this is happening. Once again I apologise if it sounded like I was in "real danger of highjacking the thread"

#39 - yet another anon replied on the 19/12/2013 7:56:42 PM

I don't know why anon_1 is so defensive. He/she is in danger of highjacking the original topic by going off at a tangent. She/he already has someone apologising when there's no need. It's simply a FACT that this person who was behaving supiciously was wearing a hoodie.

#38 - anon replied on the 19/12/2013 7:53:06 PM

I'm in Whitehill street. From what I've heard been done there, some circus drive, think one in golfhill drive and possibly onslow. Been quite a few :(

#37 - anon replied on the 19/12/2013 7:40:58 PM

Natasha it was top Whitehill street basically looking on to coop. He was studying the buzzer and think I became suspicious when I came back out 5 mins later and he was back again. Then within 30mins of picking daughter up he was still lurking around at houses at Lloyd street area. Could be totally innocent and looking for the woman but just looked shifty. I do apologise if it was an innocent guy but after reading on here last night of incidents it became a thought x

#36 - anon replied on the 19/12/2013 7:40:05 PM

Where EXACTLY are these breakins and suspicious people, DENNISTOUN covers a large area, and it would be a help to the people in this thread, if we could be more specific, my neigbours flat was broken into, around the middle of this year, it scared the wits out of me  as i live across the landing and was out,  and also most of the folk in the'close' are out during the day, I live in garthland drive, so come on folks, lets be a bit more specific so at least people who are in during the day, can try to be more vigilant. One of the biggest factors for breakins is PEOPLE LEAVING THEIR CLOSE DOORS OPEN, when going out, and the less than perfect security system.

#35 - anon_l replied on the 19/12/2013 6:38:52 PM

Lets try and not blame every "hoodie" though. My boyfriend wears nothing but hoodies but definitely isnt breaking into any flats. Anyone acting suspicious, regardless of what they are wearing should be reported.

#34 - rach replied on the 19/12/2013 5:23:38 PM

maybe you should report suspicious behaviour like that to the police? whereabouts was it? i had a package stolen from outside my flat today.

#33 - Natasha P replied on the 19/12/2013 5:22:43 PM

Anon what street was the guy looking for Katrina? Ive noticed a guy with a grey hoodie hanging around Flats opposite Iceland/Co-Op last few days.

#32 - anon_l replied on the 19/12/2013 5:21:20 PM

Please report this to the police - they need to know about all these incidents. Would be good if they could increase patrols.

#31 - anon replied on the 19/12/2013 4:34:31 PM

Hi, what do these people look like?

I just had a wee incident not sure if was innocent or not but it's made me a bit edgy. I came home to drop stuf off before heading to pick daughter up and there was a man with hood up and a white plastic bag in hand looking at the names on the buzzer. I asked if I could help
Him and said looking for Katrina. Said I wasn't sure and could be in a close round the corner. He said he go check. In under 5 mins I left to go pick wee yin up and he was at the buzzer again. 3.50pm. Said couldn't see her name there. ( no way could he have checked other 3 closes in under 5 mins). He asked name of street and said that it was two closes next to each other. Told him there was other closes parallel. He then walked round. I drove that was to pick wee yin up n he didn't bother to go into any closes but walk straight down.

Picked wee yin n headed home but had a guy feeling. So drive round to other houses n he had walked back up and lurking around and went to a close and looked again. I'm feeling suspicious :/

#30 - Doll replied on the 19/12/2013 9:50:13 AM

I had someone try to gai entry to my flat last night, about half past nine. I heard voices in the hallway and then they tried to open the door which was thankfully locked! As soon as i approached the door they ran off. I phoned the security company and asked them to a walk round of the area, was quite scary!

#29 - Anon replied on the 19/12/2013 9:39:38 AM

I started this post a few weeks ago+shocked to read there are more+more incidents! Something really needs to be done as these "people" obviously think they can get away with it. I hope they are stopped soon!

#28 - anon2 replied on the 18/12/2013 11:10:22 PM

A flat in our block, near Alexandra Parade was broken into yesterday afternoon. Doors smashed in. Looks like this is still going on...

#27 - Concerned replied on the 15/12/2013 3:30:33 PM

What street was the burglary on.  I've noticed a white van parking in Whitehill Court the past few nights.

#26 - anon replied on the 15/12/2013 12:41:19 PM

Is there a local neighbourhood watch group? A flat in our close was burgled a couple of weeks ago, rate of incidents is concerning.  Have the police made any arrests?

#25 - Anon replied on the 14/12/2013 10:34:28 AM

Where was it last night?? There was a white van sitting outside our house at 1am with the back doors open!

#24 - anon replied on the 14/12/2013 1:27:23 AM

Another burglary tonight next door to me. jewellery and cash gone. just kicked the door straight in.

Hi there, my car got broken into in the denistoun area & a very expensive custon made dress was stoeln from it, which means they have been watching to know it was there. i have gave a description to the 2 dodgy people hanging about just before it got broken into & police say he fits the description of the house breakings. hopefully this means we are a step closer to catching these people!

#18 - Fiona replied on the 5/12/2013 6:40:58 PM

I have just reported it using 101 now (what a pain the old local landline numbers are not available for the police...now everyone has to pay a 15p charge)

I spoke to a friend who is a retired policeman and he thought it very likely an attempted burglary. To give you more info, the guy who left my door then went back down the close and knocked on another door to have a similar conversation there, I think in an attempt to give credibility to what he'd said to me. At the bottom of the close he then buzzed up again - I lifted the receiver to hear what was happening and no-one said anything to me but there was a very 'staged' conversation with another person at the bottom about renting a flat on this street... My friend said that this would have been the person on lookout for the police / an owner entering the close and interrupting a burglary.

So there you have it, if you see someone hanging around a main tenement door they could just be the partner of someone already inside trying to break in. (Or I guess they could be standing somewhere else with a good view, ready to text/ phone up to alert) Again, I could have got the wrong end of the stick and I don't want everyone to be suspicious of everyone else but it pays to be aware!

#17 - anon _l replied on the 5/12/2013 3:56:22 PM

Fiona, did you contact the police about this. The thread has spooked me too. Years ago someone tried to break into my flat. Same scenario, close door wasn't closed. I am having issues with people in my building not closing the door. There's not much I can do about it though :'(

#16 - Fiona replied on the 5/12/2013 3:26:45 PM

Just to add, I would echo the message earlier to make sure you have contents insurance for your flat (a block buildings ins policy is unlikely to cover it). You can get contents insurance from about £5 a month - mine is £10 because I have a lodger but otherwise it would have been £5. We are coming up to Christmas now and people are likely to have more electronic gadgets and jewellery waiting to be wrapped up etc and thieves will know this, so be alert and spread the word!

#15 - Fiona replied on the 5/12/2013 3:23:08 PM

I just had an incident just now, which I'm not sure, but could have been an attempted burglary. I was working in my kitchen (2nd floor tenement flat, Duke Street)when I heard this soft metallic noise coming from my front door, as if someone was tampering with the lock or letterbox. I got up and walked strongly to the door so that my footsteps would be heard and then opened it to see a man trying to leave quickly.. I asked him if I could help him and he appeared very nervous and asked about a letting agency at my address, I told him that there was no such agency here. Now this could well have been a perfectly legitimate mistake, but it also felt a bit like it could have been an attempt to gain entry and then an excuse made up to appear that he was here legitimately. (But maybe I've been spooked by this thread too much!) I thought I should post about it anyway so that others are aware. I got a good look at the man, he was shortish, maybe 5 5' or 5 6', probably in his 40s or thereabouts, and was carrying a blue carrier bag.

#14 - Mort replied on the 5/12/2013 2:30:23 PM

I've said this before but I have a real problem with the service access button. When most of us are out at work, anyone is free to get in by pressing that button right up until lunchtime. I know the postie finds it handy as do the bin men and the stair cleaners but uncomfortable knowing anyone can just wander in

#13 - onechrissybell replied on the 4/12/2013 2:19:27 PM

My flat was borken into in May (top floor flat) and at that time the Police said that it was a one off incident. The burglars only took electronics and seemed to be in the flat for only a couple of minutes. Storm door was kicked in and a brick thrown through my glass door. Sounds very similar to the above experiences as my close door was also open at the time.

#12 - Mort replied on the 3/12/2013 6:22:38 PM

I know it's an obvious one but please make sure you take out some kind of insurance package if you don't already have one. It's surprising how many people don't. I know it's an added expense in these tough times but you can get some really good deals. Ours is only £15 a month and it covers everything of value in the house. A small price to pay if the unfortunate should ever happen.

hide valuables , not gonna suggest where here!!!

work with your neighbours , look out for one another. ( not always possible i know. lol)

If you want to ask the police about this issue goto the next dennistoun council meeting. They normally have a police person there to go through all the problems in the area over the past month.

#8 - anon replied on the 28/11/2013 6:38:28 PM

We had a lovely lady from the forensics team come out but, unfortunately, she couldn't find anything. Seems strange that he didn't lift the print!

We think that they act pretty fast and are only in the flat for maybe 30s - 1m, so even the most observant of neighbours (ours are great) could miss them.

Do let us know if you recover anything and I will do likewise. Fingers crossed no-one else will have to deal with this.

#7 - Anon replied on the 28/11/2013 4:46:51 PM

Hi Anon (from 28/11/13),

I am the person who started this post about being burgled. I am sorry to hear you have also been burgled! It is dreadful!! My storm door was open & my door booted in.  It is completely wrecked! They never took my jewellery (well I don't think).  Maybe they never seen it. Did a forensics guy come out?  One who came to us found a print but never actually lifted it!! I hope they catch these scumbags!

#6 - anon replied on the 28/11/2013 1:26:02 PM

I'm based on Whitehill Street and my ground floor flat was also broken into yesterday. Seems like a similar scenario, as we lost our laptops and some jewellery. The police also said we were their third break-in of the day in the area!

They managed to boot through our storm door and our inside door so there's not much more we could have done, but we think that, again, they might have gained entry to the close through the front door being unlocked.

Best just to keep an eye out and keep any valuable items well hidden. If anyone has the great fortune to recover any stolen goods please let us know!

Thanks for replies.  It is the Whitevale bowling club. We are 1st floor.  They gained access through close door - which had been lefted unlocked as usual. Other residents were leaving door open all the time & we were going to put sign up but never as though would annoy neighbours. Kicking ourselves now! Of course someone has fixed the door now!

#3 - anon_l replied on the 27/11/2013 2:03:07 PM

We have an ongoing issue with people leaving the close door open. Someone else has put a sign up saying to ensure its closed but certain residents ignore it. Its really bothering me, especially when you hear about others getting broke into.

#2 - anon replied on the 27/11/2013 2:01:55 PM

Which bowling club? Whitevale or St Rollox?

#1 - Colin replied on the 27/11/2013 12:34:56 PM

How sad,how did they gain entry? Are you a ground floor flat?
People need to be more vigilant and not just let anyone in via the door entry without checking whom they are. Some of our neighbours just open the door to anyone who buzzes.
