In what way is it 'a concern'? In that you don't like homeless people being housed nearby? Because I've yet to hear of any reports of concerning criminality emanating from it.

No, concerns are over the state of the building and the conditions the guys live in, in a facility not regulated by the Care Inspectorate.

I've had issues regarding the residents. Regularly coming into my close, urinating, sleeping on the stairs and have also witnesses the residents shouting abuse at passers by. I'd be happy to see it go.

I can see this from both points of view - I think it is probably not a very nice place to live in, but some residents do not have a choice and where do they go if the Bellgrove closes? Â On the other hand, if some residents are causing a nuisance as described, then not good either.

A building that is not in the best state ... or on the street in a rubbish pile being pee'd on by drunks?
Taking away the license will not mean a better life for those people. They obviously need it otherwise they would not use it.
What right do you have to decide if they should be offered that service

Walked past it the other week and thought the outside must have been treated to a lick of paint in the very recent past - it looked less Chernobyl-after-the-meltdown-esque than usual.

Completely agree. Obviously you on see/remember the bad things, I'm sure there is residents who keep themselves to themselves but it seems like a lot of them can do as they please.

Gentrifying the area is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Lou,it was painted ove the summer. Did you notice that they have painted over windows on the end of the building....grim! I dread to think what tourists are going to think when they visit for the common wealth games.

This nonsense about what " the tourists " will think really has to stop. People live in the East End of Glasgow 365 days a year. Any improvements in the area, or decisions about what is best for some of our societies most vulnerable people, such as those staying in the Bellgrove hotel, should be taken only in their interests. Do the people who spout this nonsense not think that " the tourists " from India,Nigeria,Kenya etc might have seen the odd bit of poverty or an occassional run down building in their day. Is there no social issues in Toronto, Sydney or London. Please get a grip.

Andy, Glasgow cannot be compared to India, Nigeria and Kenya. Id appreciate it if you wouldn't be so rude with your "get a grip comments" Can you honestly say hand on heart that you are happy with the way the place looks, not only for tourists but for everyone who is living here. I'm pretty embarrassed by it, and if I could move, I would. If I was a tourist paying through the nose to vist here then I wouldnt be too chuffed. I've been to many citys and even the poorer parts of said cities arent as bad as here. Places like the Bellgrove don't help the area. Why should vunerable people only be worried about - what about me, a young female who has to walk past that building and be frightened in case something happens to me, or if I'm going to have abuse shouted at me for no reason.

"I've been to many citys and even the poorer parts of said cities arent as bad as here"
I find that hard to believe.

With respect you dont know what cities I've visted. I also don't feel as intimidated in other cities as I do here. Anyway I feel I've highjacked this thread so apologies to the OP.

Anon_L. Have you actually been abused or attacked outside the Bellgrove hotel or are you just making assumptions based on how people look? I wasn`t comparing Glasgow to India, Kenya etc I was pointing out the fact that people like yourself seem to think that none of the visitors for the Commonwealth gammes will ever have seen anywhere run down before. I`m just glad that you never seen the Gallowgate 20 years ago; you would never have left the house.

Andy yes I have, I've also had them come into my close and inject drugs (the police confirmed they were from there) I have also caught them urinate in my close so forgive me for being uneasy with some of the residents. And please rest asurred that I don't judge people by their looks.

Oh and my boyfriend also had 2 of them pretend to pinch him when he had his hands full of shopping bags. Why should that be acceptable?
#17 - anon_l replied on the 11/12/2013 6:32:04 PM
And sorry that was meant to be punch, not pinch which isn't half as scary ;)

The bottom line is this establishment shouldnt be here at all, what family is going to put down roots here withthat on their doorstep.Time for some other area to take their shot, perhaps Hyndland,Dowanhill or Jordanhill.Somehow I dont think the residents there would welcome this,so why should we.

What should be happening is that all the folk there should be being rehoused elsewhere and living in better conditions than they do. Â I've never been in but a relative of mine has visited in a social work capacity and said it was a disgrace. Â These people deserve better as at the end of the day no matter what, they are human beings. Â I have to confess though that I never walk down that way alone or even with my kids.
