high rise flats

Got a leaflet through today saying demolition will starting soon to take these down. Is anyone sad to see them go? I cant say I am. Curious as to how they'll be demolished as there's other flats so so close. I'm wondering if they'll be dismantled?

Mcfudgie they've started work on demolishing them now so doubt they'll be used for the commonwealth games.

I was told that they were staying up until after the commonwealth games as they were going to be used to help advertise the games and the venues by erecting adverts high up.

There wasn't an exact date on the leaflet, just that demolishion will start this month.

When are they coming down?

Thanks, James C, for the link to Roond Ma Bit - I watched all 24 minutes of it and it's fascinating, if not entirely apolitical at times. And I do love the brutalist look of the Gallowgate Twins - not to mention the view!

The towers were a part of the Doors Open Day last autumn.

(You can post links on here as long as you leave out the h t t p and following three bits of punctuation.)

An estate I lived on as a kid in the early 80's had 3 of this design of block on it, all empty and boarded and due for demolition, not that it stopped us from playing in them ... they're still standing and refurbished I think. Gotta say I do have a soft spot for their brutalism and with some TLC they could be desirable abodes.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll check out the videos on Youtube.

Round Ma Bit: The Gallowgate Twins on youtube (cant  post links on here)is great little  documentary about the flats and the gentrification of the east end in the name of the commonwealth games.

Lou there was some sort of tour a few months back. A girl I know went up them and I can confirm they are as grim on the inside as they are on the out. There's a video online on YouTube made by an art student I think that shows inside them. Have to agree Malarki. What a difference it will make to the place.

Good riddance

I'm with Malarki, they are excellent beacons when lost.  Don't suppose it will happen, but I'd love a tour of the blocks before demolition.  I've never been inside, and have often wondered if they were as grim on the inside as on the outside.

Thanks for that info. The leaflet did mention the removal of the asbestos first.

At a community council meeting a year or two ago it was mentioned in passing that these buildings couldn't be collapsed by controlled explosion due to significant asbestos content.

I'm not sure how I'll navigate my way home without them?
