Hi, Gills Coffee House here :)

Don't have any idea why we haven't introduced ourselves
To this forum yet but here goes.

We have been in the coffee house for just over one year now and
Are thoroughly enjoying serving and meeting all the lovely people of
Dennistoun.

I am just writing this to let you all know that we have now extended our opening times to 8.30 am until 6pm, and have added some extra evening bites on our menu aswell as added to our lunch and breakfast menu, which are definitely worth a visit.

We are also looking for ideas to changing the name of the shop and would like some input for anything new that you would like to see on our menu

Kind regards

James and Jackiline

For anyone who hasn't been in or not sure of where we are, we are number 567 Duke Street, on the corner of Armadale Street.

Look forward to your suggestions and feedback

Kind regards

Hi there

I've been in a few times and really liked it however one criticism was that there didn't seem to be much food on offer and there was a counter (next to the toilets) which seemed a bit redundant.   There are a lot of parents here with kids who like to go for a coffee so I would like to see more kiddy offers like plastic glasses of milk or cookies etc.  Foodwise more sandwiches.

I can understand why you have kept the David Mccutcheon sign (nice lettering and a very original dennistoun sign) but perhaps it's time to establish yourselves at this address and get your owm name sign.  It's all about awareness.

I'd be sad to see the sign go as it's one of the few original signs still around. To be honest we actually just called you Mccutcheons coffee shop as we weren't sure what your actual name is.

I've been in a few times and both the food and coffee ahve been good so please take the following as constructive feedback: 1. the area at the windows with the big cushions seems a bit redundant, why not turn it into a display area where you could show off what you sell maybe, have the cakes or something on disply there? You could put glass shelves across the windows 2. the service has alwsy been a tad slow. 3. if you removed the stool counters you could probably get more tables in. not everyone wants to sit on a high stool 4. it's never clear whether you go to the counter to get served or someone comes over; this seems to change each time and depends who is on. 5. A wider range of cake and perhaps even some vegan scones scones which are surprisingly easy to make. 6. biscuits with coffee. 7. the place feels a tad cold both in temperature and atmosphere. Have fun and success.

Try and get more tables in,thats important. You really must get a quality name sign and give it your own identity.Every thing else is just fine good luck.

I have to disagree I love the old signage and was so impressed when you were doing the property up you kept the sign.  I appreciate the desire to have your own identity, what about having your name printed on the windbreaker outside (not sure what they are called but you have them outside with puro printed on them)!

I would go as far as calling yourself Mccutcheons Coffee House. The signage is already there for you and it looks great. Please don't cover the old signs.

Better still why not go the whole way and just call yourself The Pharmacy. It's what it used to be and the signage is a real positive. You've already nodded to the past with the old bottles on the shelf so be brave and take it an extra step.

It's the sort of thing that could set you apart. There's a roll shop in Haghill with photos of old Dennistoun on the walls. Makes waiting for your order more interesting. If you could get some old pics of how the place used to look it would be a really nice touch. Actually, I think you might already have that.

You've got a nice place there. Just regroup and rethink what you want to be. You can't please everyone. When you first opened it was very clear what you wanted to be. It seems recently that you're maybe not sure.

You make a really nice coffee so that's a great start. Get the jazz tunes back on and it'll all be fine :)

I love the old sign! I'd be sad to see it go, I think it's a lovely feature! I've been in a few times and had coffee and a sandwich which were both fantastic. The high stools by the windows are great for people watching but I'd prefer some comfy sofas/seats if there was room, even if there was only room for one or two. I love the fairy lights you have dotted around, think it gives it a really cosy feel so please don't get rid of them!

I think the cake display case could be changed to something a bit more interesting - I think it's just glass at the minute? The whole place feels quite cosy and unique so it would be nice to have something that reflects this here too!

Hi there

I agree with getting rid of the seating at the window.  Could you block off the side door to create more space inside or is that used for people to access sitting outside.  Counter could be smaller to get more tables in and certainly a comfy couch would be great.  I love the old sign.   Not keen on the high stools as I have children so rarely use them.

Mort, I love your suggestions. Hope James and Jakeline.

I do love the old signage and think McCutcheons coffee house is a good idea.  It would be a way of keeping genuine, original signage and give the place identity.

Your cafe is great, I enjoy coming in for a coffee and a bagel. I love the exposed brick wall and the little touches you've put in - you're clearly trying to make it a stylish space instead of your typical greasy spoon cafe. Keep the sign and just go with your gut about the decor, don't be afraid to make it stand out! I like the suggestions of The Pharmacy or McCutcheon's coffee. To be honest I don't think there's much wrong with the place, glad to have you in the area.

Why not get a new sign and call it Gills coffee house. The old sign is hardly a work of art, its different on both sides and a bit worn out.Its your business stamp your own identity on it and good luck.

I love the idea if calling it the pharmacy and keeping
the old signage.

It will be a shame for the sign to go. I recently was looking at old pictures of Dennistoun and saw that the sign has been there since at least the 1930s.

However, unfortunately the "Dispensing Chemist" sign on the side at the very least has to be covered up and calling it "The Pharmacy" is a no-go. It's a criminal offence under the Medicines Act 1968 to use either term unless your premises is actually a registered pharmacy. Captain Buzzkill strikes again! My work here is done :P

It's a pity as well, you might have got some extra business from people wanting their prescription dispensed but coming into the café and staying for a coffee!
