Duke Street Expo / East End Social
Stewart Henderson posted on the 22/05/2014 9:35:36 AM
Hi,
I'm running The East End Social project which is putting on the Duke Street Expo event on May 31st (you've maybe seen the posters or heard about it).
I've become aware that there are a number of shopkeepers and proprietors on Duke Street who would like to be involved in the event but know nothing about what the day entails, what's going on and where it's happening.
The clock's ticking of course but I'd like to try and arrange a time and a place where several of us could meet and I could explain in a bit more detail the background to The East End Social, the people that are behind it and ways we can try to make The Duke Street Expo as inclusive and enjoyable for as many people as possible.
The East End Social was an idea developed by Chemikal Underground: a small, well respected independent record label that's been based in Bridgeton for 18 years. Â The East End Social itself has proved to be an idea with real potential but continues to mushroom into something altogether bigger which is why our resources have been so stretched and why we've not been able to communicate directly with all of the shopkeepers and interested parties that we would have ideally liked.
It's never too late to right a wrong however, so if there was a place and time that might be suitable for number of interested parties, I'd be very keen to meet you face to face and discuss what we're doing and how the day might be improved for everyone (logistics permitting of course).
Hope you don't mind my posting here but it would be great to meet and discuss the Expo in greater detail.
Best,
Stewart

I'd just like to thank all of the residents, proprietors and venues of Dennistoun for making Saturday's Duke Street Expo such a resounding success.
We couldn't have hoped for a better day and the manner in which everyone took part just made the whole event feel genuinely special.
I know that there are a number of ways we might have delivered it better so it would be good to find a practical way for us all to get together and plan/discuss ways to make it an annual event.
Thank you all once again and please pass our gratitude on to anyone you know who doesn't visit the forum.
Cheers,
Stewart

I think all the organizers of the duke street expo need a massive round of applause. It was so great! I'm part of the everlasting arms and saw how much work was put into preparing the church. Very professional and loved the little details you were on top of. Just a very nice day :) well done!

Hi,
Sorry I've not got back to you both sooner and thanks very much for the responses. I'll drop the Dennistoun Photographers a line, that's a great idea. Â Tomas, do you run the Crown or are you a punter? Â I'm a big fan of the Crown as it happens and I'd like to link it in if possible.
To be honest my thought was to disrupt the normal Saturday business in the pubs as little as possible though and simply encourage people to pop in and out for pints etc. throughout the day. Â We hadn't planned on hosting any 'concerts' or pop-up performances in the pubs, thinking it was best to reserve them for watering holes.
Happy to knock that on the head of course if there was a better way to do it? Â We could put DJs in or perhaps help out in other ways if there were any specific ideas you had in mind?
I'll be on Duke Street tomorrow about lunchtime (we're putting on a matinee show in The Bowler's Bar on Sunday afternoon and a big gig at the Barrowlands from 5pm so it's all go at the co....)
Cheers,
Stewart

There's a photography group here in Dennistoun called the Dennistoun
Photographers Group. I saw their exhibition at the Briggait last year and was
really impressed. I'm sure they would be keen to get involved with the image side
of things. Maybe they could document the day for you. They have a Facebook
page or you can email them at dennistounphotographers@gmx.co.uk
Hope the event goes well. Nice to see something a bit different happening in the
area. Wonder if many people will get their passports out and travel over from the
West End.
