Dennistoun Big Lunch 2014

Dennistoun Community Council posted on the 25/05/2014 4:07:03 AM

The 2014 Dennistoun Big Lunch is being held as a partner event to the Duke Street Expo, also taking place on Saturday 31st May, as part of the East End Social schedule of events.

It will take place on Saturday 31st May, from 1-3pm, in Dennistoun Village’s ‘Buffallo Bill Square’ at the corner of Whitehill Street and Finlay Drive.

The aim is to get Dennistoun residents to share lunch with their neighbours, in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. It will be a great excuse to meet the people who we share our slice of Glasgow with.

Bring your own food, or try some that’s already been brought along: Bake a cake, surprise us with sandwiches, bring homemade dip and crisps, decorate fairy cakes, create carrot batons, cook up some sausage rolls, whip up a few choc rice krispie cakes, add some nibbles, rustle up a wrap, bake some brownies, select your favourite sweet treats and savoury snacks... those are just a few of the possibilities!

But supplying food is not required and you are very welcome to just come along and sample the delights on offer - we look forward to seeing you there.

Well done for organising and hopefully my family and I will be there next year!

Thanks to all who pitched up and participated at the Dennistoun Big Lunch on Saturday.  We had well over 100 people throughout the afternoon and feedback on the day was incredibly positive.  Food was plentiful and delicious with contributions ranging from cup cakes to chocolate rolls, pasta salads to pakora.

DCC used the event to engage local community in identifying environmental issues and opportunities; we also consulted on the ‘Days Out in Dennistoun’ map and mobile app that DCC is developing for launch in September.

Our links with the Duke Street Expo enabled sessions from the Hume Saxophone Quartet and the Gramophone DJ - both of which were enthusiastically received.  Photos will soon be posted on the DCC website.

Please let us know if you attended the Dennistoun Big Lunch and have any feedback or suggestions for future events.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend 'The Big Lunch' although I passed by it.  Looked good. Lots of people I know didn't know about it.   I only knew about it by coming on to the forum as I do on a regular basis.

I think these things need to be promoted more widely.  Even fliers through folks doors as not everyone reads/knows about this forum.

Milnbank had their fun day from 12-2 on Saturday and it was mobbed but then again they contacted all their tenants to let them know what was happening.

Dennistoun was alive at the weekend.

The big lunch and expo was great and really brought the best out of our area.

I didn't actually know about the big lunch until I missed it and the expo I heard about on the forum. Most of my friends and neighbors in the area didn't hear about it until I texted them.

I saw a lot of people heading out of Dennistoun after the last gig, so I have to ask did we do enough to promote this locally. Were we too passive in this role?

I saw one flyer on the bottom wall of the butchers during the event.

We want this again next year and fingers crossed we will get the scorching weather also.

I went along today with a few friends and it was great. Everyone was friendly, the food was good and the saxaphone quartet were excellent.
Thanks for organising it!

Plenty of neighbours are pitching up at the Dennistoun Big Lunch tomorrow.  Weather is predicted to be lovely and the list of dishes that folk are bringing (for own consumption and/or to share) is ever-expanding.

Our link with the awesome Duke Street Expo event means that there'll be a number of Big Lunch pop-up appearances. Already confirmed are:
- The Hume Saxophone Quartet (half hour set between 1-2pm)
- Gramophone DJ's (rare grooves from 2:15 to 3pm approx).

DCC will provide disposable plates, cups, cutlery and napkins as well as a variety of picnic food (salads, sauces, breads, water, juice, fruit). We'll also bring tables, chairs and a gazebo (or two). Just bring yerself and something to eat/drink.

All welcome to participate - enjoy your own space or be prepared to meet some of the wonderful people who live in Dennistoun. No need to register but it would a real help to drop us a line at hello@dennistouncc.org.uk (even if it's just to say hello).
