Commonwealth Games - info on local road closures

Dennistoun Community Council posted on the 9/06/2014 1:42:22 PM

Glasgow 2014 has organised drop-in events for communities to find out what will be happening in local areas on road event days. These drop-in sessions will allow residents and businesses to ask questions and get advice on how they can change their normal routines to minimise impact on their day-to-day activities.

The event for Dennistoun takes place on Friday 13th June at Dennistoun Library - 10am to 2pm.

Hi,

Will someone be able to post any relevant info on this forum after Friday's meeting? I'll be working and won't be able to attend.
Went along to the session at the end of May in the Emirates Arena, however it seemed to be taken over by very upset residents living closer to the venues. There wasn't a chance that Dennistoun residents' concerns would have been answered as they seem to pale into insignificance compared to the force of anger by the majority present at the time.

I guess it will be: if you're lucky you'll find a space somewhere. It might be useful though to get an idea when this all will be kicking off/ last for given the necessary preparations beforehand and clear-up afterwards.

I was just about to ask the same if there will be any minutes of some sort with the info that will be discussed on Friday. Why on earth are they having it during the day when people will be at work.

The fact that the "MEETING" is being held in the middle of a
working day, does not seem to me,that they are in the least
interested,in the working people, who have to work around all
the diversioms and restrictions that will be enforced.
But on the bright side at least we have a choice, like it or
lump it!

For those unable to attend a meeting, www.getreadyglasgow.com is the single source of information for all work being carried out to keep the city functioning in the lead up to and during the Games.

Maps and information available via that link indicate that the Cycling Time Trial on Thursday 31 July seems to be the only case where there will be specific road closures and diversions etc that will affect roads in and adjacent to Dennistoun.

The race takes place along Gallowgate, up Millerston St and then Cumbernauld Road and past Alexandra Park, continuing out along Cumbernauld Road.

Duke St will be restricted to residents only access between Belllgrove and the Bakery.

Because the race route runs from Gallowgate to Glasgow Green, anyone in Dennistoun wishing to travel with a vehicle into the East End will be diverted west along Duke Street, into the Merchant City, and toward the South Side. Similarly, anyone in Haghill and further into the East End wishing to travel with a vehicle to the North or West of the city will be diverted via the South Side and 'under' Glasgow Green.

There will be no waiting and no loading from 00:01hrs on Tuesday 29st July 2014 until 23:59hrs on Thursday 31st July 2014 along the route.

The Marathon on Sunday 27th July and Cycling Road Race on Sunday 3rd August will not affect Dennistoun directly, but there will be widespread closures, diversions and parking restrictions in the South and the West of the city all day on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of each respective weekend.

In short:

Avoid car travel in, to, from, and through Dennistoun on Tuesday 29st, Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st July and expect public transport variations.

Avoid car travel in, to, from, and through Glasgow West and South Friday 25th, Saturday 26th, Sunday 27th July and Friday 1st August, Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd August and expect public transport variations.

Triangle, thankyou for that excellent information. I'm on Millerston Street, I'll look on the bright side side and say I'll have an excellent view!

Just been down to the library and Triangle has pretty well told everything. The only additional information is that all streets crossing or running into the cycle route on July 31st will be closed to traffic for what appears to be 50 yards. Pedestrian access is available, except during the race itself. The closures take effect from 3am on July 31st and may last until midnight to allow for clearing of barriers etc. On July 27th there will be increased traffic on Duke Street as vehicles are diverted to avoid the marathon route.
