Recent positive changes to Dennistoun?

Around 9 years ago, I looked at buying a flat in Dennistoun around the Drives. I never proceeded because I just didn't find the right one so settled on the southside. I'm starting up my property search again and will include Dennistoun again.
I recalled a lot of debates on this forum in that period about the negative aspects of the area - litter, dog mess, anti social behaviour, street robberies and burglaries, neds, lack of pubs/ cafes/amenities.
I know all these could apply to virtually any area in Glasgow.
But in your opinion, has Dennistoun improved over the last 5 or 10 years and if so, how and why? Is it a safer place?

Yes, I'd say Dennistoun has changed considerably in nine years. For want of a better word it's undergoing gentrification. There are very few facilities for teenagers, but to my mind there is slightly less litter and dog mess, although frequent mentions of the latter on this forum indicate this may depend on where you stay. Within the past couple of months two pubs have opened providing imaginative meals, a wide choice of beer and hardly a chance of being asked outside for mentioning the wrong football team. We have several decent cafes and delis, one of the best Indian restaurants in Scotland, and a nationally acclaimed bakery. The negative aspects of Dennistoun frequently monopolise this forum, but this could be seen as demonstrating a core of people who care about the neighbourhood.

why don't you come over and have a look for yourself, the south side is not that far, you will get a better feel for the place and whether you want to live here.

After living in the west end, I ventured east into Dennistoun over 7 years ago. I have to admit I wasn't keen initially, as I didn't know the east end or Dennistoun and had a pretty negative image. However, I couldn't have been more wrong! This is a great area to live. It's got every amenity that most folk could need, loads of transport links, green spaces, easy access to motorways, walking distance into the merchant city and City centre, good places to eat, some recently opened great places to drink, big flats at decent prices, but most of all, genuinely nice, friendly folk, on the whole!! I can't imagine ever living anywhere else now. And the recent improvements to the local and surrounding areas, which, if what the Legacy for the east end promises to deliver, will see Dennistoun and the east end just get even better.

Thanks for the info.
I will definately have a thorough wander around (and at different times of the day) but just thought I'd check in to see if long-term residents had witnessed any notable changes in this period. I appreciate the the insider view.

I moved to Dennistoun about a year ago and I love it. I grew up in the South and for a while lived West but I never considered the East End. However when I needed somewhere new to live, I got the opportunity of taking a flat in Dennistoun and as I didn't have much choice (or a West End budget!) I went for it. And I'm so glad I did. Â All the neighbours in my close are lovely, there's a Co-Op really close by, a beautiful park, excellent transport links (including a bus that takes me South when I need to visit my folks) and I can walk to the City Centre in 25 minutes. A new Italian restaurant/take out has just opened (Amore), another Italian restaurant a little further along the road (Celino's), there's a retail park just 15-20 minutes walk away (which includes a 24 hour Tesco), two 24 hour petrol stations and a couple of nice bars have opened nearby too. There's plenty of other amenities along the Parade too - pharmacy, hairdressers, newsagents, off-licenses, hardware stores...
I am also quite comfortable walking home in the evening from my work in the Merchant City and although I live right at the edge of the main road, I rarely hear any commotion outside - it's very peaceful. The noisiest thing I hear is the delivery trucks for the Co-Op and Iceland!
