another new pub?

I've just seen that the variety bar on Duke Street is getting a make over and a new name. Anyone know what's happening there?

Yes, it's called Redmonds of Duke Street. Wonder if the guy who started the thread a while back has anything to do with it.

Facebook page says it is opening later in July.

Wow,

This one really flew under the radar.

With the likes of The Duchess, Drygate and even the Dennistoun BBQ we knew something about them before they opened.

I just saw it the other day and now it's opening.

Well, look forward to trying it. With all these new additions on top of the great places already here, the area is really looking like it could be a very good food/drink hotspot.

I went in last night and really liked it - the food is excellent and a bit different from the standard pub grub (the specialty seems to be steamed buns with different fillings), good selection of beer, friendly staff.  I'll definitely be back.

Woohoo.

Dennistoun is finally on the radar.

Get using these places people and invite your friends from across the city to sample a slice of Glasgow's best neighbourhood.

Dennistoun is a great friendly place with lots of different pubs and restaurants, there is something for everyone you just have to look. I can't understand a lot of earlier posts on the forum putting Dennistoun down. This great little piece of the east end has been changing for the better over the last few years and businessmen have been spending a lot of money on premises and improvements. Go out and enjoy them :)

Agreed, John.

There have been some valuable contributions from businesswomen, too. :-)

Went in for food last night.  It's great,  reasonably priced and decent beer and a nice vibe. My pizza was excellent and the steamed buns looked delicious.  Really hope it does well. The owner made a point of coming up to speak to us which I liked.  !

It's a great addition to the area. Fine selection of food and drink, cool decor and chatty staff. Aren't we lucky these days?!

We popped in here yesterday evening and were impressed with the choice of beers, the friendly staff and the presentation of the food. I can only comment on the presentation at this point as we were just in for drinks but I shall try one of the interesting menu choices next time. A steamed bun or a pizza?

Went in the other day, good pints, great cocktails and the staff are super friendly! Can't wait to try the food.

Can anyone shed any light on what a steamed bun is? I'm intrigued!

I'll need to take a jaunt to this. Probably wouldn't take much to top the Variety Bar anyway.

I've had a steamed bun there twice now. It's basically a light, steamed white bread bun in a taco shape. It originates in oriental cooking, and the fillings Redmond's offers reflect this. I've had one with pork and spicy sauce and another with king prawn, chilli and lime. My husband sampled the chicken one. All were delicious, and there's a veggie option too. It's basically a sandwich, but it's very tasty, and for four quid, it's well worth trying. (The guys at Redmond's explained all the above history to me, by the way!)
I didn't know the new owners before I went in, but I can say that it's a really friendly place, and you can go in just for a drink, so if you're not sure, just pop in and see it for yourself.
There have been many threads on this forum asking for different bars/food places, and it looks like we've now finally got a real choice in Duke Street. Let's all support all of them as best we can!

Does anyone know if you can take kids in if you want something to eat?  Really looking forward to trying it!!

#20 - anon replied on the 7/08/2014 9:14:58 PM

Can't take kids in yet - think they're awaiting license for bar. Nice bar, good beer and food, friendly staff. Prefer the atmosphere in redmonds to anything else in the area.

Thanks for that Swan. They sound delicious!

Went to Redmonds a few times over the last few weeks, as I was back in Dennistoun visiting.
Great place, highly recommended. Loved the Joker IPA, and the chicken bun was just fantastic. Great flavor and texture!
Tried the pork but, was a bit fatty for me.
The potatoe wedges with Rosemary were also a great addition.
Place had a good crowd, so hopefully will maintain the standards it has already set.
Look forward to going back there when I come back!
