dog dirt/litter
sbrown posted on the 9/02/2015 5:03:35 PM
hi, I live on Roslea and I am disgusted on a daily basis with the litter and dog dirt on Roslea and the surrounding streets - I have just got a puppy who sniffs and attempts to eat things so maybe I am just noticing this more. I think a lot is coming from the High School at lunch - chippy papers, Greggs and Subways wrappers. but in the last few months I have seen all sorts including boxer shorts! I have written to GCC about the dog dirt and never heard anything, anyone got any ideas on how to tidy the area up? im sure it would be beneficial for all residents of Dennistoun! I actually get embarrassed when I have visitors.

International multi-sport events seem to bring the street cleaners and council enforcement officers out.

Too bad we won't be having an other International multi-sport event any time soon eh ;)

I regularly walk down Roselea to visit friends and think it's one of the worst streets in Dennistoun for dog mess. I also have a dog so I'm disgusted with irresponsible owners. Not sure what the solution could be, community wardens patrolling perhaps?

Hi Ami, if you want a worst street, try Thompson St. A foul disgrace. //

I have complained about this and the school blame the local businesses, the kids just throw rubbish on the ground. Also I tend to take a picture of people who don't lift there dog **** as naming and shaming them to the council so they can be charged is the only way. If people don't want to lift dog **** then they shouldn't be allowed a dog in the city. Simple.

As a dog owner I always pick up the mess, most streets are covered in rubbish and dog mess, maybe a solution is more bins needed, always find myself carrying the bag of mess for a while before i come across a bin,but yeah its not just the lack of bins its just the untidy people and the school kids are not just to blame there's plenty of others! The patrolling will just cost money as well as more bins,so tbh can't really see anything been done to stop the mess.

It's not just Dennistoun, it's the whole of Glasgow. I was visiting a friend in Giffnock (posh, I know) last week and it is lovely and clean. No rubbish, no dog dirt. It's not Glasgow City Council but East Renfrewshire that are responsible and it shows. It's about taking a pride in the area you live and, harsh as it may seem, most in Dennistoun don't. Rubbish, dog dirt and all sorts of detritus. Miserable.

Put up more signs for a start= contact MP Peter Martin.

Well said The Mentalist...It's the people themselves that are the problem. They keep blaming everyone else. If they would use some common sense and put their rubbish in the bin, the area would be a lot more pleasant.

I have noticed a definite upsurge in the amount of dog fouling in Dennistoun. I walked it into the flat last night as I hadn't noticed in the dark that I had trod in it, disgusting! These people have no regard for others, they even let there dogs defecate outside the Nursery on Onslow Drive. Keep an aye open, photograph them and contact the council, persistent dog foulers must be punished, if that fails shame them on social media!

When abroad I saw just outside a very busy railway station which had a snack take-away shop, a large net, very like a basketball net, about 5foot off the ground which people used. - No litter on the ground, just the thrill I suppose of getting your rubbish in the net. Psychological I suppose. I am sure this is the sort of thing which could be beneficial around schools where take-away shops are located.

its just awful I actually think its worse now!
also some of my neighbours just dump rubbish (washing machines, wood, mattresses) out my back court anyone know if the council will take this? its making it hard to get in and out and our bins never got taken yesterday!

I think the council used to do uplifts of bulk rubbish one day a week (think it was Tuesday on the Parade).
But they changed the policy and you have to leave it in the back courts, which is what your neighbours are doing, I guess.
I believe it's not sufficient just to stick it out there though. I think they have to call the council and request an uplift which is a seperate process from the normal bins collections. I'm afraid I don't know the phone number, but I guess it would be on the council web site as Mrs Anderson looks after that in our household. I think she's said that when you make the request that you have to be quite precise in what is to be picked up.
Good luck.

Why are GCC not picking up litter in Dennistoun when you can see that they are in most parts of the city?-WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
#16 - sbrown replied on the 26/02/2015 9:36:59 AM
thanks, I will keep an eye and phone the council myself, its a total mess. I don't understand why people don't just take care of the areas they live

Anyone have any ideas how to stop neighbours letting their dogs use the communal back court as a toilet? They think it's ok as they pick up the faeces.... I strongly disagree and despite 3 conversations about this with the offenders it persists. GCC aren't interested and the factor's letter was ignored. Grass turning brown and being ripped up by claws. Furious at filthy antisocial behaviour but can't see what I can do to stop it.

JRC I agree, I have a dog but lucky I am ground floor so he only goes in our garden,i have seen many out the back that don't pick up - some of the backs are a mess as it is.

Perhaps the good people here at Dennistoun Online could put up a "photo and shame" page where we can post pictures of people breaking the law? With a bit of social media publicity (and maybe even local news picking it up) it could be popular.
Perhaps a bit of public exposure might stop it.

If anyone was to photograph me while my dog done its buisness,I would be the one doing the reporting! And yeah a do pick up the mess, still wouldn't like anyone taking my picture.
#21 - anon replied on the 6/03/2015 3:15:18 PM
It's perfectly legal to photograph people in a public place.
#22 - C replied on the 6/03/2015 10:29:39 PM
Fair point Anon. Well if people are thinking it would help stop the mess then photograph away!
#23 - anon replied on the 17/03/2015 9:26:20 PM
The best thing to do is report dog fouling and littering to Clean Glasgow on 0300 343 7027
They can organise for things to be cleaned up, but will actual put more enforcement officers in places they get regular complaints from www.cleanglasgow.org.uk/
#24 - sbrown replied on the 18/03/2015 7:50:08 PM
thanks, I will do. I don't understand it badly educated dog owners YUK!
#25 - Colin replied on the 20/03/2015 9:56:34 AM
Yeah, it's perfectly legal to photograph random people on the street. Not that it has happened to me, but the police will supposedly spout a random madeup law to you that DOESN'T EXIST. You see a dog fouling? Pop off a picture.
#26 - Sarah replied on the 23/03/2015 12:22:37 PM
I hope if people see folk letting their dog take a dump they actually call them on it instead of taking a photo - it's not inly disgusting it's dangerous.
One thing that's worked in other places is to use a temporary spray and spray on the dog poo - See ideas here: bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22853270
