swimming baths

A question for the oldies like myself. Am I correct in thinking that there were ladies only, gents only and mixed swimming sessions in the 1950's----and perhaps into the 60's as well. I always went to Shettleston Baths as a kid but I'm sure the practice would have been universal at the time---assuming my memory's correct.

Hi Jeanette, there was a private swimming pool on Craigpark, where the Masters snooker club is now. They had 3 days a week each for men and woman and a mixed day on a Saturday,i think. And not just into the 60's. I lived in the close next door throughout the 1970's and my parents got me a child membership as soon as we moved there when i Was 5 so I learned to swim there. While I moved away around 1980, the place was still struggling along right into the 80's.
Slightly off topic but I was talking about this with my brother recently. When Whitehill pool opened, it seemed like every kid in the area descended on the place and, for the first wee while, you had to queue for over an hour to get in.

Thank-you all. I'm not losing my marbles just yet. I live in Australia so topics like this don't come up and it's difficult to know if you're remembering things correctly. Thanks to you too Wullie, for the extra information re the Whitevale Baths although I'm pretty sure I never visited them despite the fact that we lived in Dennistoun and had no indoor bath either. We used to go to my Nana's place at Parkhead for a bath I think, and us kids always went to the Shettleston Baths in the summer.

I think the swimming pool at Whitevale Street had a separate pool for ladies also had a steam Turkish bath.

I think jeanette is thinking of the old pool down at the whitevale high flat, there were two pools, male and female.
No mixed bathing!

I think some pools still do ladies only sessions. I believe Holyrood in the South Side does this and possibly the Gorbals pool too.

In the 60's? They had that at Whitehill pool up until 1999 so you cant be that old :-) (I'm 35!)
Also had male/female only sauna and plunge pool that was done away with when the place was decorated a few years ago.

I think you may be correct as I remember there was male, female or mixed sauna times so I assume this would also be the case for swimming as well, and I actually think it may have went on till the 80's or 90's.
