Stray Cat

Hi, wondering if anyone knows anything about this cat.
He is a black and white (tuxedo and white paws) short haired moggy and rather old and scruffy looking. He's been hanging around our area (between Finlay and Garthland) for as long as we've lived here (5 years). He's always looked in fairly good health so I've not worried about him particularly. Recently he's been looking quite ill, losing weight, recurring eye infection and most worryingly a bald patch on his chest due to a rather sore-looking wound. I'd like to help him/take him in but want to know for certain that he doesn't belong to anyone. Any info will be welcome.

As a new cat owner this all certainly puts my mind at ease! Should the wee guy make a break for it I know he'll be fine with you guys on the case! what a great sense of community.

Sad but correct decision Curious

Sascha has decided to spend the rest of her life in the countryside. It's not been an easy decision to make but it IS safer for her and she can get out and about as she likes without the worry of cars etc.
I fully understand people's concern and I realise that she was at risk so we have decided to let her go and stay with the in-laws who are happy to look after her for the rest of her life. I could/would not have wanted her last days to be spent cooped up indoors - it just isn't her style. Thanks to everyone for looking out for her.
Maybe now Albert will get out his huff and come home for longer periods of time! ;)
And Barney hasn't even noticed...

I've been reading this thread even though I don't own a cat and just wanted to say how nice it is to see people being concerned and taking note of what is going on even if the outcome isn't necessary what the owner wanted. Shows community spirit and why I like Dennistoun so much!!!

Hi Curiouscat,
Sorry but it was me who took Sascha to the sspca on Saturday. I am thrilled to hear she is back where she belongs, wha a grand age for such a lovely lady!
We saw her sitting very close to the kerb, looking disorientated and a bit grubby. We were concerned as she didn't appear to be reacting to traffic or strangers and we were afraid that she was a house cat who had gotten out and that something would happen to her. We tried to first take her to Alba vet (which we use for our cat) to see if she was chipped. Unfortunately as the vets was closed we felt the safest thing was to hand her to the sspca. As a cat lover I am sure you appreciate that we had the best intentions. I noticed she was wearing a collar but as there was no ID information on it we couldn't know for sure that she lived locally.
Would she (as the previous poster suggested) tolerate a tag or infer barrel on her collar?
I know older cats can struggle to clean themselves, we have found the pet wipes suggested above quite effective for our old lady. //
Sorry again for any inconvenience but we really did mean well!

@curiouscat just ignore those "concerned ladies" your doing the right thing letting her out, it would be cruelty forcing an outdoor cat to stay inside, doing that would make Sascha's last few years miserable, you really seem like an animal lover and a responsible owner so well done.
would Sascha tolerate a wee medal on her collar with your address and her situation inscribed on it ??

Curiouscat, this sounds like a great story for a local paper to take up, surely? It's really nice to see that people care so much about Sascha, but obviously they're only getting one side of the picture. Get her in the Evening Times!

Thing is anon, she DOES wear a collar! Just had an earful from some concerned ladies about how irresponsible we are for letting her out! Not going to win this one no matter what we try and do for Sascha.

here is an idea curiouscat, could you not put up a lamented poster on the fence at Ingleby drive and another one on the fence opposite the shop on Armadale Street where Sascha likes to sunbathe, then anyone who is passing and concerned will see the poster and know she isn't a stray cat

@curiouscat
in a way its good that people are willing to try and help a cat by phoning the sspca when they see a cat that looks in distress, but at Sascha's age taking her to a strange place can do more harm than good, would she not accept wearing a collar as this might be less stressful than being lifted, its a good idea about giving the sspca a description of her and letting them know the situation though, its heart-breaking when your cat goes 'missing'
one last thing some pet stores sell cat coat wipes for older cats who cant groom themselves as good, they are just like wet wipes - only for cats

Think I jinxed myself! Someone lifted Sascha today and took her to the SSPCA! I have been chatting to people all day about her on the street. Luckily for me they are bringing her home (I don't drive). I'll need to get more posters up around the streets I reckon!

Thanks anon. I've been fielding people all week! I have put another poster up so hoping that will help people realise that Sascha has owners who look after her. She IS manky but I cannot help that! Like you say, a bath would probably kill her! I clean her eyes every evening but her legs are her doing. She licks at them and they get dirty. She doesn't seem to be in any pain though and is still eating and drinking well. She also seems to like the garden over there as the sun is nearly always in it. I'm doing what I can but there's only so much she'll let me do. Thanks for stopping them calling the SSPCA. Think I might phone them myself and let them know that she has owners etc.

@curiouscat I saw your cat Sascha opposite the shop in Armadale Street today, there was a couple of schoolboys petting it, the boys stopped a man (I think he was a meter reader) and said they were worried about the cat as it was so thin and thought it must be a starving stay, the man offered to call the S.S.P.C.A, but I stopped and told them that a lady in Whitehill Gardens owns it and its so thin because its 23 years old, the boys also said but its manky, I told him that it was so old that it would have a heart attack if you tried to give it a bath, the man seemed happy and left - just thought you should know that Sascha was nearly lifted again curious

"I love all the cats". And we love you. I think it shows a very good side to this community when people look after their pets and other wee animals properly.

I met wee Sascha a couple of times, she's a lovely wee thing!
There's another cat with a missing leg and tail visits me lately. A wee tabby, he's actually at my back window giving my kitten kissy eyes right now.

I just wanted to praise Anna for doing everything right here. I hope it was a happy outcome? My cats don't go out, but it's great to know that if they did stray, people in the area care enough to help.
Curiouscat, I've never seen Sascha, but Albert is obviously a local character. Is your other ginger boy just like Albert, but without the smudge on his nose? I've been caught out a few times by him, but he seems to answer to "Not-albert"! :-D

Thanks for letting me know it's your wee cat curiouscat.... As an animal owner I take more notice of other animals but admittedly know little about cats. I'll keep my eyes open for this other cat

Curiouscat - I completely agree which is why I am trying to find out information from the local neighbourhood first. In addition to any heartbreak or stress it could cause a potential owner, it would undoubtedly be very stressful for the cat too. Not to mention the cost at the expense of the SSPCA.
He doesn't have a collar, never has. I have tried attaching a paper collar but he won't let me as he's a wee bit nervy.
I have posted on the Missing Cats in Scotland Facebook page with a photo appealing for information. If anybody wants to get a closer look, you can find it on their page (this forum won't allow me to post a link).
Unfortunately I can't take him in until he's been tested for Feline Aids as I have a cat already and don't want to risk infection.

I have a 3 legged black and white cat called Sascha who is old and scruffy but she is fine in herself. She eats and drinks well and loves to sunbathe. She was across the road from the newsagent in Armadale St at lunch time yesterday Ami. I wonder if that's who you saw. I have never seen a male black and white cat in the area but will keep my eyes open. If you you are concerned Anna, you could attach a note to the cat in the form of a "paper collar" and then if he does have an owner, they will know that someone is concerned about him. For the record I have 2 other cats who are ginger and white and they all wear collars. Has this wee cat got a collar on? Sascha was lifted by the SSPCA despite this (from outside her house) and it caused no end of problems. Unless you think he is being neglected hold off on that call please.

Aws, that's such a shame. It might be worth taking him in to look after him for a little bit, check to see if he has been chipped as well, might be a case he has an owner but have moved and hes wondered back.

Call the SSPCA. They will come out for a stray or if you can catch him, bring him to Cardonald Cat and Dog Home.

I think I saw this cat today at lunchtime across the road from the newsagents and the wee square at Armadale Street. I thought the same... Looked unwell. First time I've seen it but will look out for it now as I'm always around that way walking my dog
