Is it not something to do with the Pedal for Scotland.

Large caravans have now been installed now I notice.

A planning proposal to turn this area into a traveler site was submitted in 2012. Must have gone through.

There was a thread about it on the forum at the time, google "Paton Street Traveller site" and it's the first link.

Forgive my ignorance, however what exactly do you mean by a "traveller site"? Is this a permanent fixture?

#5 - PH replied on the 15/09/2015 11:27:01 AM

Yes Alan, I believe it will be similar to the sites along the railway towards Shettleston. A permanent site for members of the travelling community to live on. I have found the minutes from a Dennistoun community council meeting stating it will be restricted to 5 dwellings (I assume caravans).

Will this be monitored by relevant authorities to determine if any more caravans parked up will be legal / illegal?

PH, you have either misread the DCC minutes or they are wrong. The proposal was for approximately 50 chalet dwellings and around 100 vehicles. There is also a storage area on the site. All in all I would consider this development to be a much better use of the site than its current neglected and derelict state.

Its for all the travellers that had to be moved from the Clyde Walkway due to the Police Scotland HQ being there now.

Just a question relating to the use of the word "travellers". Doesn't the fact that there are now permanent sites for people who live in caravans mean that they are no longer "travellers?". Wasn't that always a euphemism anyway? Perhaps they still want to be known as travellers but it does seem a bit of a misnomer. Slightly off the topic I know but curious as to why they wouldn't want to be known as Romany. It's not as if there isn't some prejudice against them no matter what name.

Hi Jeanette,

Romany people are originally from India and live throughout Europe, they normally have swarthy skin and dark hair (think of Esmeralda from the Hunchback of Notre Dame). Traveller is usually used to describe people originally from Ireland (think Paddy Doherty from Big Fat Gypsy Weddings). They live similar lifestyles but are a different ethnic group.

Where to start...?

Firstly by noting that the 2012 Paton Street planning application was specifically for a Showpeople site.

Want to know more about the application? Go to publicaccess.glasgow.gov.uk/online-applications and search for reference 12/00533/DC

Yes, the December 2013 Dennistoun Community Council minutes do, incorrectly, refer to it as a proposed Traveller site (but the prior 2012 March-May DCC Planning Application Report uses the correct terminology). The reference in the minutes to 'five properties' is about neighbour notifications being restricted to five adjacent properties. As Ann has pointed out, the application was for 50 serviced plots.

The DCC docs are available via dennistouncc.org.uk/applications and dennistouncc.org.uk/minutes

If you put the term Showpeople Scotland into a search engine the first handful of pages provide lots of useful and interesting information about terminology, history, culture, and origins of (and distinctions between) Showpeople, Gypsies, Travellers, and Roma.

Thanks PH. I didn't know they were ethnically different. I thought they all had the same origin and (for whatever reason) got dispersed---because they are 'travellers'. However, I still think the present day term 'traveller' is a misnomer given that they live on sites permanently. Do you know if that's their preferred name/title?
