Oxfam chopping doors late at night

BonnieT posted on the 13/12/2015 1:03:08 AM

We've not long moved into Whitehill Gardens and someone rang the buzzer at 9pm stating they were from Oxfam. Does anyone know if Oxfam normally go around doors at this time? We didn't allow them access to the building as it was so late and we were worried about break ins.

They have been about recently but you did the right thing - anyone can chap the close door and pretend they are from anywhere. Unfortunately some of my neighbours buzz anyone in and with us being ground floor we generally get a chap on our front door once a week.

It's from a company called Home Fundraising who act on behalf of charities. They are not allowed to chap your door post 9pm.

Tbh don't let anyone in. If folk want to sell or market you something they can do so in the street or via advertising boards. I find it really concerning especially for vulnerable/elderly residents to not only be disturbed but to have sales/charity folk round the doors.

Some areas are cold caller free zones. I think Dennistoun would benefit from becoming another.

We had a guy apparently from UNICEF. We were polite and said we weren't interested but he was very insistent. We explained we chose our own charities to support and he wanted to know what charity it was! While we weren't bothered and could handle him I can imagine them being intimidating to older/vulnerable people.

I object to such fundraising methods and have complained direct to organisations before. Oxfam fundraising team can be contacted via this webpage: www.oxfam.org.uk/get-involved/fundraising/regional-fundraising-managers. And I'm saying that as someone who works for a charity - we don't employ such techniques to fund our work.

I live in Garthland drive and I had those two girls chapping my door at 8pm too, when I asked who they were they said they were from Home Fundraising on behalf of Oxfam, then one started the spiel about hundreds of people dying everyday from lack of water, I told them I wasn't interested as I decide which charities to give to and I give to them directly instead of through a private company, those girls were very persistent though and it seemed an odd hour to do door to door collecting.
you are better giving to charities directly because those girls get about £60 for every victim that they sign up and the company they work for also get about the same, and it's the monthly contribution that you sign up to that first pays the girls bonus and the companies profit before the charity gets anything, in the end the charity doesn't see much money

I'm fed up with those very cheerful ladies who want to know who I bank with and at what bank my bank account is with. Obviously a major scam as they say they are from "Save the Children", but they are so delightfully happy, somebody might fall for it. Had them up here a few times.

I have had people knocking at my door after 8 o'clock at night claiming to be oxfam, do they usually come that time of night seems a bit off.
