Taggart - There's been a murrder!
On the 9th and 10th December scenes for the new series of Taggart were shot in Circus Drive. Local residents were warned of temporary traffic restrictions to Circus Drive and Broompark Street and not to be alarmed when they see several police vehicles in the area. The episode being filmed finds a father and son murdered with bibles at their side and the Taggart team contend with the silence of a strict religious sect.

Coia’s Café raises over £6,000 for Yorkhill

Antonia and Alfredo Coia presenting the cheque to Kirsten Sinclair, Community Fundraiser from Yorkhill.

Last month to celebrate 80 years in Duke Street, Coia’s Café owners, Alfredo and Antonia Coia held a celebratory event including a charity auction and raffle for the Schiehallion Ward at Yorkhill Hospital. The charity auction was expertly handled by Adrian Coll, Radio Clyde DJ, who ensured that the bids were high. Several local business people donated many highly valued items for the auction including signed Celtic and Rangers football shirts and boxing gloves signed by Frank Bruno and Amir Khan.

Alfredo Coia said “We are delighted to present this cheque to the Schiehallion Ward at Yorkhill. We chose this particular charity for our charity auction as the work of Yorkhill has touched the lives of many of our staff and customers at some point in time.”

Yorkhill Children’s Foundation was set up in 2001 with the aim of providing the “extra” services and equipment needed throughout Yorkhill, which would not otherwise be possible, from providing state of the art equipment to children’s entertainers.

OFT Investigating Factors following Dennistoun Survey
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has launched a study on factors (property managers) after the Scottish Consumer Council (SCC) submitted evidence which highlighted a level of detriment experienced by consumers of property management services.

Heather Clayton, of the OFT, said: 'This study will take a detailed look at Scottish property management services, consider how well they are working for homeowners, and take a view on any recommendations which might bring positive outcomes for consumers in Scotland.'

Douglas Sinclair, chairman of the SCC, said: 'The SCC has expressed concerns about the current system of Scottish property factoring and welcomes the OFT's announcement today. We look forward to working with the OFT as it looks in more detail at this important area for Scottish consumers.'

The SCC submission is the result of their research carried out in Dennistoun. It included a survey in 2007 on this website (Dennistoun Online) of homeowners’ views on property management that showed a high level of dissatisfaction with communication, costs and timescales for repairs.

Factoring services are provided by the private sector, local authorities and registered social landlords. Residents use the factors to manage common and shared property. Factoring services include organising repairs, maintenance, improvements and the administration of buildings insurance.

The investigative study will involve gathering and analysing evidence from homeowners, factors, and other key parties as well as co-operation with the Scottish Government and the SCC. It will consider issues such as how much choice and information is available to homeowners, how property managers are selected, the quality and costs of the services provided, how homeowners can effectively manage services and whether homeowners have access to redress when things go wrong.

Homeowners wishing to complain about their factor should contact either Consumer Direct or their local Citizens Advice Bureaux for advice on how to deal with their concerns. The OFT would though be interested in hearing direct from homeowners about their experiences with factors and, in particular, the effectiveness of the factors complaints redress systems if they have had cause to pursue a complaint.

Submissions should be sent to:

Scottish property managers market study
Floor 2C
Office of Fair Trading
Fleetbank House
2-6 Salisbury Square
London EC4Y 8JX

They can also be emailed to: propertymanagers.study@oft.gsi.gov.uk

The deadline for written submissions is 5 September 2008 and the results of the study will be published at the end of this year.
