Dennistoun Community Council NEEDS YOU!
Dennistoun Community Council requires new members to continue to operate. There are nine positions available. If you have a genuine interest in representing your community, to listen to matters affecting them and to express those views to the City Council and other public bodies, then Dennistoun Community Council wants you to join now. An election meeting will be held on Tuesday 11th January 2011 at Whitehill Secondary School, 280 Onslow Drive. If you are aged over 16 years, resident in the Dennistoun area and would like to join then please download the nomination form and send it to -

Woman Dies Crossing Duke Street
A 37 year old woman was struck by a bus while crossing the road near John Wheatley College on Wednesday 15th December 2010 at 7.50pm. The woman received serious injuries and died at the scene. Police enquiries are continuing and witnesses are asked to contact officers at Helen Street Road Policing Complex on telephone number 0141 532 6400.
School Closures
Due to the adverse weather all Glasgow City Council schools and nurseries will be closed to pupils tomorrow, Thursday 9 December 2010.

Woman Robbed Alexandra Parade Dennistoun
A 27 year old woman was robbed of a four figure sum of money while walking along Alexandra Parade near Craigpark Post office. At around 1.30pm on Monday 15th november 2010 the woman was approached by two men who demanded her bag and ran off with it down Whitehill Street towards Duke Street. The woman was unhurt but was extremely distressed by the incident.
The cash was from a local business being taken to a bank for deposit. The bag also contained a mobile phone and other personal belongings. The suspects are both described as white, around 6ft, slim build and were of gaunt appearance. They were wearing scarves covering their faces and woollen tammies. One of them was wearing a dark coloured "Berghaus" jacket.
Detective Constable Cameron MacLean said: "Enquiries so far have revealed that there were a number of people standing at a bus stop very near to where the woman was robbed. A couple of these people have already spoken to us but I urge anyone else who witnessed the robbery to contact London Road CID on 0141 532 4600."

Elderly Woman Assaulted and Robbed in her Home
Police are appealing for information after an 86-year-old woman was robbed in her own home in Craigpark, Dennistoun on monday 18th October 2010 around 2.00pm-2.30pm. The elderly woman opened the door to a man who said he was working in the close and asked if he could use her toilet. When the man came out of the toilet he assaulted and robbed her of cash.
Detective Sergeant Jackie Ferrie said: "Although the lady was uninjured and didn't require any medical treatment, she has understandably been left extremely shaken and upset. Unfortunately the elderly lady's eyesight is quite poor and we don't have a detailed description of the suspect. However, we do know that when she left her flat to raise the alarm after the incident, a foreign woman wearing a red coat assisted her in contacting police. This woman may have further information about the suspect and I would appeal directly to her to get in touch with us as she may be able to assist our enquiries."

Carbeth Exhibition
until 14th November 2010
Dennistoun-based artist Frances McCourt has photographs being exhibited in Glasgow photography gallery Street Level Photoworks on the ground floor of Trongate 103 building from now until 14th November. Her exhibition Carbeth shows some of the huts in the Carbeth area on the north-west outskirts of Glasgow where landowners allowed city dwellers to build holiday shacks from the 1920s to the present day.

Studio Project 22 - Kari Stewart
Using video and drawing to investigate our relationships with institutions, Kari Stewart's practice highlights life within the cracks of these institutions and investigates the inherent power structures and mythologies within them. For her residency with Market Gallery, Kari intends to undertake a project that will instead explore relationships with landscape and simulated spaces, taking "The Sea" as a starting point.
Kari Stewart received her MFA from the Glasgow School of Art in 2008. Recent exhibitions include Die Show im Oktober, Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (2009) and The Cinema is Nicholas Ray as part of the 2009 Glasgow Film Festival.
Studio Project 23 - Kate V Robertson
Kate V Robertson's work often demonstrates failure, futility and pointlessness, in a variety of materials both ephemeral and concrete. For Market Gallery Studio Project 23, Robertson will build a giant rock, which will sit awkwardly, imprisoned in the gallery space. The process of building the rock will be visible to passers-by during the residency, making the artist's rather haphazard process a performance of sorts. The rock in this work refers to the myth of Sisyphus, whose task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again, was the basis for philosophical theories of futility and the absurd.
Kate V Robertson received her MFA from the Glasgow School of Art in 2009. Recent solo exhibitions include Pieces at Galerie Feinkost, Berlin (2010) and What Structures at Intermedia, Glasgow (2010).

Closure of Lightburn Hospital
Consultation on the proposed transfer of rehabilitation beds from Lightburn Hospital in Glasgow's East End to Stobhill Hospital has begun. This can result in the closure of Lightburn Hospital and comments on the proposal are invited. The proposal will then be taken to the NHS on 21st December 2010 and will also contain details of the public consultation process and a full summary of all comments received during the consultation period. If approval is given, the recommendation will be forwarded to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing. The Cabinet Secretary will make the final decision as to whether the proposal goes ahead or not. This outcome will then be communicated by mail and email to all people and organisations taking part in the consultation.

The 72nd Boys Brigade Needs YOU!!!
The 72nd Boys' Brigade are recruiting new members for session 2010/2011 which commences on Wednesday 1st September. We are based in the upper hall of Dennistoun New Parish Church, 9 Armadale Street and meet every Wednesday at the following times:
- Boys in Primary 1 to Primary 6 meet from 6pm 'til 7.30pm.
- Boys in Primary 7 meet from 7.30pm 'til 9pm.
- Boys in S1 - S4 meet from 7.30pm 'til 10pm.

Dennistoun Community Youth Project
DCYP Outreach teams are on the streets of Dennistoun, Milnbank, Wellpark and Reidvale to encourage young people to take part in various activities in the area and to provide information to the young people so they can make an informed choice. Their annual report is available for download.

Alexandra Parade Closed to City Centre Traffic
A major water main burst in Alexandra Parade caused traffic disruption on Friday 18th June 2010. Scottish Water immediately carried out emergency repairs. The failure of an automatic valve leading to higher than normal pressure caused the burst on the 27inch main pipe. The pipe is a major main that supplies water from the Milngavie Water Treatment Works to Dennistoun and Haghill. Scottish Water carried out repairs to the automatic valve and the pipe on the same day with most properties having their water supply restored. Reinstatement works to the damaged road and footpaths continued to disrupt traffic over the weekend with Alexandra Parade closed off at Alexandra Park Street and Craigpark.

Oarsome Project launched on the Clyde
Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club is making rowing more accessible to all communities in Glasgow with the purchase of a new club boat and oars. The boat naming and launch ceremony was at Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club, West Boathouse, Glasgow Green on Tuesday 8 June at 6.30pm. Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Archie Graham invited Michael and Stephen Abram to name the boat and launch it. Representatives from sportscotland and Culture and Sport were in attendance with all club members. More>>
Lulu Performs Exclusive Gig for Marie Curie Hospice
Lulu took to the stage at 29 Private Members Club in Glasgow on Thursday 3 June to play an exclusive gig to 100 guests in aid of the Big Build Appeal. The international star was on song as she returned home for this one-off performance which raised a staggering £101,000 for Marie Curie's Appeal, which has built a new hospice for Glasgow.
The songstress, originally from Dennistoun said: "I am honoured to be part of the Big Build Appeal event and to support Marie Curie Cancer Care. This is one of my favourite charities and I completely support the marvellous work they do
The black-tie evening, hosted by well known Scottish comedian Andy Cameron raised significant funds for the Big Build Appeal which is nearing its end, with only £600,000 left to go to reach its £16.1 million target.

Robberies in Dennistoun after Woman Abducted
A 42-year-old woman was forced into the back of her car and robbed of cash in the Bridgeton area by two men around 5pm Sunday 16 May 2010. She was held against her will and the car was driven to Dennistoun where the men threatened and robbed several people in the streets. They abandoned the gold coloured Ford Focus in Duke Street at Bathgate Street instructing the woman not to move while they made off. She was unhurt but extremely upset by the ordeal.
Detective Inspector Graham Cordner said, "This was a despicable crime which placed the woman in a highly distressed state and was followed by further crimes in the local area".

Attempted Murder as Car Mounts Pavement
Police are examining CCTV footage and appealing for witnesses in order to establish the driver of a small black car that struck two men walking along Duke Street on Tuesday 4th May 2010 at 4.15pm.
The car mounted the pavement near the Bristol Bar and British Bakeries and appeared to deliberately drive at them before heading in the direction of Haghill and Riddrie.
The men, in their early twenties, were taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. One man sustained serious head and back injuries and police are treating the incident as attempted murder.

The New Variety Bar
Jim Ronald and his wife are set to take over and refurbish Molly's Bar and aim to re-open mid April as The New Variety Bar. The bar at 304 Duke Street, Dennistoun was originally called the Variety Bar in the 60's and the new bar will have a "variety entertainment" theme with some fantastic old memorabilia of Glasgow theatre shows on display.
Jim Ronald said: "To let locals know what is going on with our new project, we are extending an open invitation to one and all to our opening night which is to be confirmed. Anyone who's a karaoke fan will be excited about our karaoke competition which will start on May. The 1st prize will be a holiday to Barcelona for two."

The Boys Brigade Needs YOU!!!
The 72nd Boys Brigade are currently recruiting new members.
We meet every Wednesday (except during school holidays) at Dennistoun New Parish Church.
Boys in Primary 1 to Primary 6 meet from 6pm 'til 7.30pm. Boys in Primary 7 up to S4 meet from 7.30pm 'til 10pm.
The Object of the Boys' Brigade:
"The advancement of Christ's Kingdom among Boys and Young People and the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence, discipline and self respect and all that tends toward a true Christian manliness."
We want our boys to learn how to become a valuable member of their community and encourage them to respect one another as well as themselves. Through our badgework programme, boys will develop skills and earn badges and awards in the following areas: Body- fit for fun, Mind - think and do, Spirit - God and me, Community - me and my world, Creativity - make and do.

Dennistoun Community Youth Project (DCYP) have updated their youth "Whats On" sheet listing activities for young people in Dennistoun. Clubs listed with days and times include: Swimming, Football, Hap-Jitsu, Tae-Kwon Do, Gymnastics, Theatre, Explorers, Girls Brigade, Boys Brigade, Brownies, Scouts, Beaver, Rainbows, Disco Dancing, Guitar, Duke of Edinburgh, John Wheatley Youth Access and many more.

Elderly Woman Robbed in Home
A 79 year old woman was alone in her home in Whitehill Street, Dennistoun when she was robbed of a three figure sum of money. It was around 2.40pm Monday 11th January 2010 when a man entered her home, threatened and robbed her. He then ran towards Duke Street. The elderly woman was not injured but very traumatised by the incident. The suspect is described as white male, 27-33 years, 6'1", thin with a local accent. He was wearing a red baseball cap and dark coloured padded jacket. Anyone with information is asked to contact London Road police on 0141 532 4600 or CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111.
