Market Gallery are looking for new Committee Members
Market Gallery in Duke Street, Dennistoun is looking for proactive, enthusiastic people with an interest in visual art to join their committee and be involved in the development of their artistic programme. The Crews
The Crews is Scotlands first Internet Gangster show and is now available online at Blip.tv. The Crews follows the exploits of two Glasgow gangsters who both grew up as pals in Duke Street and made their name in the east end of Glasgow. The series is based on the short film Sandwich, that was filmed entirely in Dennistoun.
Whilst not all of The Crews is set in Dennistoun a lot of it is. Next weeks episode sees a sizable chunk filmed at the Craigpark Masters Snooker Club. The six part series is now online and each episode will be launched every Monday morning for the next six weeks.
The series has only been online a couple of days and has already been selected by the television hosting site Blip.tv as a Staff Pick for Drama. The episode can be watched directly at:

Caring Christmas Trees
Impact Arts, a community arts charity based in Dennistoun are selling ethical Christmas trees online, with collection points around the city. One of these points is WASPS Studios in Dennistoun. A small selection of trees will also be available to buy from the site without pre-ordering online. Information regarding the trees can be found on the Caring Christmas Trees website. All profits help Impact Arts to continue their work in local communities helping people tackle the issues that affect them creatively.

Woman Robbed in Duke Street
A 24 year old woman was robbed of a small sum of money and belongings at knifepoint on Saturday 1st October 2011 around 8.20pm. She was entering a close in Duke Street near to Whitehill Street Dennistoun when she was threatened by a man with a knife. The man is described as white, 5ft 10in, medium build, bald in his mid 30's. He was wearing a dark coloured jacket, black flat cap and a scarf covering the lower part of his face.
Detective Constable Richard McAvoy, London Road CID, said today: "Thankfully the woman did not require hospital treatment, however, this was very frightening for her."

Alexandra Park Bike Track
The Milnbank Carbon Reduction Project, a new community initiative set up by Milnbank Housing Association, with funding from the Climate Challenge Fund has been instrumental in the official opening on the 1st September 2011 of a purpose built mountain bike trail in Alexandra Park.
The mountain bike trail uses recycled materials and revitalises what was the old putting green next to the park's fountain. The steep slope in places incorporates technical mountain trail bike features providing the challenges expected of this modern cycle sport. Cyclists can use their own bikes or get one on loan from the nearby Haghill Park Community Sports Centre.
The Climate Challenge Fund forms part of the Scottish Government's Sustainable Action Fund. The projects supported include recycling, increasing energy efficiency and encouraging the use of low carbon transport. The Fund has now been extended to the end of March 2012, with over £10 million available to community groups who wish to make a real difference by reducing carbon emissions in their local area.

The Explorers Group in Dennistoun Receive National lottery Fund
Brendon Cole, the ballroom dancer on the BBC show Strictly Come Dancing, visited the Explorer Group in Dennistoun on behalf of the National Lottery. Brendon said: "Because you guys do such a great job, I'm here to present you with this cheque, a grant for £9980!"
The Explorer group is a group of young adults with extra support needs and live in the community. They could have physical disabilities, learning disabilities or mental health issues and the group empowers them to achieve the things that teenagers their own age would do normally.
Project Leader, Paul McIlvenny, said: "This is great news for the group. It means we can now work with a younger age group, which there's a huge need and demand for in the area."
The Explorers Group is part of the Reidvale Youth n Action Project for 12-18 year olds offering youth activities.

Dennistoun Woman Victim of Bank Card Scam
Strathclyde Police is warning people to be aware of unintentionally handing over their bankcards to thieves. They report incidents of card fraud in the past couple of weeks involving a 67-year-old man from Carntyne, a 56-year-old woman from Maryhill and an 84-year-old woman from Dennistoun.
The victims all received a call from a man saying that he was from their bank and that someone had compromised their bank details. The caller then asked them to provide their PIN number and advised that a special courier would collect their bankcard. The victims and the man on the phone agreed on a password that the courier would use to collect their card. A short time later the courier arrived, gave the agreed password and they handed over their bankcard.
Someone then used the bankcard to withdraw money from the victims account. The description of the courier who collected the bankcards is male, Asian and in his 30s.
Detective Constable Ross Jamieson from London Road CID said: "Anyone who calls you and says they are from your bank and asks you for your PIN number and card is a fraud. Do not give out any of your personal bank details and if you are in any way unsure, contact the police and your bank."

Dennistoun Tenement Flat Fire Rescue
Fire and rescue services attended to a reported house fire in a ground floor flat in Garthland Drive 6.45pm Monday 27th June 2011. Levels above were also affected and twelve people including a baby were led to safety and the fire extinguished. Three women were taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary suffering from smoke inhalation and superficial burns while others were treated for shock.
Dennistoun Project Receives Donation from Bank of Scotland Foundation
Dennistoun Community Youth Project was one of twenty-three charities from across Scotland to share in nearly £290,000 in the first tranche of donations from the Bank of Scotland Foundation. DCYP received between £10,000 - £20,000 from the Foundation's Small Grants Programme.
Kate Guthrie, Chair of the Foundation's Board of Trustees said: "We've had a fantastic response to the Small Grants Programme and are delighted to make these first awards to very deserving organisations. We know they will bring valuable support throughout Scotland and in the communities they work closely with."
Alexandra Parade Primary School is Top of Class in Scottish Education
Winners of the 2011 Scottish Education Awards were announced on 14th June at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow and Alexandra Parade Primary School picked up top honours in three categories.
Headteacher of the Year award went to Linsey Hay, headteacher at the primary school since 2008 in recognition of her inspirational leadership. Staff and pupils collected the Aiming High award for best practice in overcoming barriers to learning and also received the Health and Wellbeing award for their holistic approach to mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing.
The Scottish Education Awards were set up by the Scottish Government and the Daily Record to acknowledge the achievements taking place within Scottish education.
Whitehill Pupils in Marketing Challenge
Whitehill Pupils Win GCU Professor’s Challenge and Awarded Net Books by Dell
S6 pupils from Whitehill Secondary School in Dennistoun are competing in the S6 Professor's Challenge with other Glasgow schools this week to solve real-life marketing challenges at Glasgow Caledonian University.
This year's S6 Professor's Challenge, organised by the university's Caledonian Club will be set by leading global technology provider Dell and Airdrie's Albert Bartlett who sell a million bags of Rooster potatoes every week.
Specialists from the university and staff from the firms are on hand to advise pupils as they set their minds to various business challenges, including how to get younger people to buy potatoes and marketing a Dell tablet PC to a younger audience.
Around 250 pupils from All Saints Secondary in Barmulloch, Drumchapel High, Springburn Academy, St Margaret Mary's in Castlemilk and Whitehill Secondary will each work on their campaigns for two days before presenting their ideas to panels of experts. The top teams will then go head to head, pitching their ideas to 150 guests.
Caledonian Club's Susan Grant, said: "It is the first time the challenge has been set by real companies and working on real-life challenges will help highlight to pupils the link between education and employment."
John Hicks, Albert Bartlett's Marketing Manager, said: "The S6 Professor's Challenge is a great and worthwhile project, allowing pupils to realise their potential. We look forward to working with them and tapping into their ideas."
Mark White, Site Lead at Dell's Glasgow operation, said: "We recognise the importance of helping young people build sound business skills and giving them a glimpse of some real-world business challenges. Since we set up Dell's Glasgow operation in 2005, we've recruited heavily from within Scotland and have always been impressed with the high-quality talent pool available. It's our hope these pupils can go on and achieve real success and confidence in whatever they choose to do."

Glasgow Caledonian University's award-winning Caledonian Club works with youngsters from nurseries and primary and secondary schools in its community and their families to raise life-long learning aspirations and equip club members with life skills.
A Cleaner Dennistoun
Councillor Elaine McDougall launched the Cleaner Dennistoun Initiative at Alexandra Park entrance gates on Wednesday 1st June 2011. Children from local schools took part in a clean up operation on the day and each school received a certificate for their participation. It's got Gangsters! Guns! Cars! Violence! Sandwiches!...and Sandwiches did you say?
Yes that's right! Foghorn Films proudly present the release of their free to view short film SANDWICH starring Robert Harrison, Chris Somerville and Joe Cassidy! The no budget Independent short film shot entirely in Dennistoun is the story of retired gangster Tommy Granger who has left the life of crime behind him and gone straight. However on one normal day In Tommy's new life an incident occurs that threatens to pull Tommy back into the life he vowed he would never return to again.
Sandwich received its online premiere at 12 AM on Monday the 30th of May 2011 on Youtube and Vimeo. The short film has been developed for the past several years and was the springboard for a follow up TV mini-series The Crews.
Directed by Colin Ross Smith, Sandwich is heavily inspired by classic American Gangster films like Goodfellas & The Departed and British crime films like Layer Cake & Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Sandwich is a layered story filled with excitement and danger that is not often seen in Scottish films. The short film has been described as being too violent to be put out on TV networks and has received some great attention from the local independent film community.

Dennistoun Wins League Cup - Corkerhill V Dennistoun (ko Saturday 21 @ 2pm)
A confident Corkerhill team, playing on their home ground at Nethercraigs, dominated the game from the beginning. With relentless lashing rain pushing against the Dennistoun Ams it seemed the trophy belonged to the Hill's when they scored two goals in quick succession. The Dennistoun team's strength was in their steadfast refusal to believe the game was slipping from their hands and they rose to the challenge to equalise before half time.
All seemed lost for the Dennistoun Blacks in the second half when one of their men was sent off for handball and a penalty was awarded to Corkerhill. The shot hit the top bar keeping Dennistoun in the game, albeit now reduced to ten men. Corkerhill now had more influence but Dennistoun chased every ball resulting in an opportunity for a great lob over the Hill goalie putting Dennistoun in the lead. Corkerhill was strong in coming back scoring the final equalising goal of the game but the points given were not enough to stop Dennistoun from lifting the West of Scotland Amateur Football Association League 1st Division League Cup. Alexandra Parade Primary Pupils Meet DAP the Dog
Albavet veterinary practice in Dennistoun visited Alexandra Parade Primary School for their 2011 National Pet Awareness event. Staff held an information period with P4 classes where they discussed topics relating to dogs, cats and rabbits from the importance of vaccination, worming and flea treatment to grooming and socialisation. Each child received an information pack and free goodies.
The children also entered an art competition 'Pet Nose Day' to decorate a facemask of their favourite animal. Two children from each class won two free complimentary entry passes to Amazonia based in Strathclyde Country Park.
Yvonne Shaw, Albavet Practice Manager said: "The main reason for us choosing this as our event of 2011 is to raise awareness of pet ownership within our local area. To communicate the value of pets and promote the importance of pet care specialists and related services. The afternoon was a great success and the children enjoyed this experience. We look forward to raising awareness like this in the future."
The event provided Albavet Veterinary Surgery the opportunity to chat with children and teachers about the importance of pets and the role they play in our lives. At the end of the event the children were visited by Ceva's 'DAP the Dog' and the 'Purple Cat' to promote their calming products. The National Pet Awareness Month runs from 2nd April to 2nd May.

Young Man Assaulted and Robbed Alexandra Parade
A 22 year old male was assaulted and robbed of money and mobile phone while walking along Alexandra Parade towards city centre at 3.20am Saturday 9th April 2011. The incident happened near Alexandra Park when he was approached by 2 males who threatened him with a metal bar then punched him. The suspects made off towards Alexandra Park Street. The young man contacted the police when he got home. He did not require hospital treatment.
The suspects are described as white Scottish males, 22-25 years old, wearing grey hooded tops. One has a shaved head medium build the other slim build. Strathclyde Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact London Road Police Office on 0141 532 4636 or contact Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

Whitehill Secondary Pupils Think Ahead
Pupils at Whitehill Secondary School joined others from across the city to take part in Caledonian University's Think Ahead project, headed by its multi-award winning Caledonian Club. The project is designed to motivate young people to plan for their careers early.
Eleanor Wilson, who heads the Caledonian Club, said: "The university's staff and students were delighted to welcome 600 pupils to take part in Think Ahead. The project compliments the support pupils receive in school before making their important Standard Grade option choices. Through working with our student mentors, drama leaders and academic staff, pupils better understand the link between their school subjects and future study and careers, and can see for themselves all that university life has to offer."
The Caledonian Club, which has won Times Higher Education and Herald Society awards for its work to widen access to Higher Education, works with young people from nursery and throughout their school years to raise life-long learning aspirations, build confidence and develop life skills such as communication, team working and problem solving.
Whitehill pupils had a chance to learn about some unusual career options they may not have considered with taster sessions in areas including thermal imaging, resuscitation, lung-capacity testing and audio engineering. One Whitehill pupil said: "It helped me choose the right subjects".

Youth Activities in Dennistoun
Dennistoun Community Youth Project (DCYP) have released their latest information sheet about youth activities in the Dennistoun area. DCYP have staff on the streets of Dennistoun to help direct young people towards activities that they might be interested in and find out what they would like to see put on in their area.
Pensioner Killed in Dennistoun House Fire
An elderly man died after a fire in his home at Whitehill Place, Dennistoun at around 3:30am 23rd February 2011. Fire and Rescue teams were in attendance.
Driver Attacked in Circus Drive Dennistoun
A 23 year old man was in his car when 2 young men approached him. They tapped the window and when he opened the door they demanded he get out of his car. He was then threatened by a knife, punched in the face and his car was driven off by one of them. The incident happened in Circus Drive, Dennistoun just after 8am on Monday morning 21st February 2011.
The car was an Audi A3 that was abandoned in nearby Broompark Street. The 23 year old did not require to go to hospital. Detective Sergeant Jackie Ferrie from London Road CID said: "There appears to be no reason at all for this attack and it's important we trace the men responsible."
Both suspects were white, 18-20, 5ft6in-5ft7in, slim with local accents. One wore a white hooded top with the word "BEAR" on the front in blue with a red background. The other was wearing a light coloured blue adidas top with yellow stripes on the sleeves.

Subway Shop Armed Robbery on Alexandra Parade
Police are appealing for information following a young man who entered Subway on Alexandra Parade around 8.35pm 3rd February 2011 and threatened a female member of staff with a firearm demanding money. He ran out without the money and headed in the direction of Duke Street. There was no customers in the shop at the time and the staff member was not injured.
Detective Constable Dougie Slater of London Road Police Office said: “Initial enquiries have revealed that the suspect was also in the nearby Dominos Pizza shop shortly before the robbery and may have been outside the Subway shop for around 20 minutes before the robbery took place."
The suspect is described as white, 18-21, 5ft 7 - 5ft 9, slim build, wearing glasses, balaclava, quilted "Barbour" jacket, yellow top, gloves and blue and white trainers.

Murder Investigation after Man found Dead in Flat
Police are investigating the death of Andrew Alexander 56 found in his flat at Hillfoot Street, Dennistoun on Saturday night 29th January 2011. The street was cordoned off and officers called on neighbours the following morning with search teams combing the area. Relatives have been informed.
Detective Chief Inspector David Gailey of Strathclyde Police Major Investigation Team said: "The last contact we are aware of with Mr Alexander was during the afternoon of Friday 28 January 2011. It is crucial to the investigation that we build an accurate picture of his movements from then, until he was discovered on Saturday night, and I would therefore appeal to anyone who knew him, or may have been in contact with him to get in touch with police as a matter of urgency.
"At this time we just don't know why Mr Alexander was murdered but we know that he was the intended victim. He sustained multiple stab wounds and suffered a horrific death."
An incident room has been set up at Baird Street Police Office and anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, is asked to contact officers on 0141 532 4100. Alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS may be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.
Update: A 29 year old man is being held in police custody (5/2/11).
Update: Robert Mason admitted murdering Andrew Alexander. Judge Lord Turnbull adjourned sentencing until 19 August (1/7/11).

Serious Assault on Duke Street
Police sealed off a newsagents on Duke Street with an officer standing guard outside after a serious assault on Sunday afternoon 30th January 2011 with one man taken to hospital.
Rugby League Player Chad McGlame signs for Hull FC
19 year old Chad McGlame from Dennistoun has signed a twelve month contract with professional Super League team Hull F.C. He took up the sport of Rugby League during his second Year at Smithycroft Secondary school and went on to play for Easterhouse Panthers Amateur Rugby League Football Club.

Man Attacked in Duke Street
A 31 year old man was attacked by two men around 1am on Saturday morning 22nd January 2011 while walking towards Dennistoun along Duke Street near Tennents Brewery. He was struck on the face with a glass bottle after refusing to give money to the men. He is being treated in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The two suspects are described as white aged 18-20 and ran off towards the High Street.
