Dennistoun pub undergoes renovation and raises £5k for charity

Popular Dennistoun community pub, The Duke, has undergone a significant refurbishment following a £50,000 investment. When it reopens on 16th August, the renovated local will be sporting fresh external décor, a modern bar and flooring, brand new furniture and fittings, and a new selection of drinks.

Owned by award-winning pub company Hawthorn Leisure, The Duke has been serving the people of Dennistoun since the late 19th Century, and the newly refurbished local aims to be a central part of the local community for many years to come.

Under manager Clare Carvill, the pub has developed a reputation as one of the most charitable pubs in Glasgow, regularly raising money for Marie Curie. Shortly after the pub’s reopening, Clare will welcome representatives from the charity to hand over more than £5,000 raised over the past year.

“We’re always trying to do our bit for Marie Curie at the pub and the fact that we’ve been able to raise so much money is testament to the generosity of our customers and our wonderful staff,” said Clare.

The Duke Street pub is a well-established part of the community, renowned for its friendly staff and great value drinks selection, as well as its live sport offering, bingo nights, and live entertainment on weekends. When the bar reopens, customers will be able to enjoy all their favourite drinks, plus new premium lager additions Amstel and Birra Moretti.

Of the renovation, Clare added: “It’s great to be able to give the pub a makeover and I’m sure the customers and the bar staff will love it. We have a great relationship with our regulars but we love welcoming strangers in as well so we’re looking forward to seeing familiar faces as well as some new ones when we reopen.”

Hawthorn Leisure managing director of operations, Mark McGinty, said: “Clare and her team have done a fantastic job in making The Duke a thriving community hub, and this refurbishment will make it an even better place for friends and families to get together.

“The amount The Duke has been able to raise for good causes is a credit to the staff and the regulars, and on behalf of us all at Hawthorn, I’d like to congratulate everyone involved.”
