Man Attacked on Alexandra Parade
London Road police are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault that happened on Alexandra Parade on Monday 28th December 2009 just before 1am. A 30 year old man and his girlfriend were walking along the Parade near Hanson Street and were attempting to flag down a taxi when a white Volkswagen Beetle approached. The girlfriend waved at the car which stopped and the female driver began arguing with them. The female driver is described as White aged 28-30 with spikey blonde hair and stocky build. The female driver then continued with her journey but after a short distance turned the car around and returned to the couple. A male passenger got out and attacked the man with a blunt instrument. He got back into the car and they drove off. The victim was taken by ambulance to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he was treated for head injuries and later discharged.
G101 Off-Sales Robbery
Two men robbed the G101 Cumbernauld Road of a three figure sum of money and cigarettes on Sunday 13th December 2009 at 8.30pm. Two staff were threatened with a weapon but were not injured and it is unknown in which direction the robbers ran off. The suspects spoke with a local accent and both wore a dark duffle coat, blue jeans, dark gloves and scarf, which covered their face. One was approximately 40 and 5'6", the other 20-30 5'9". Police are keen to speak to any witnesses that can help them with their enquiries and in particular an elderly man who entered the off-sales as the two suspects left. Witnesses are asked to contact London Road CID on 0141 532 4636. Alternatively, information can be passed to CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111 - anonymity can be maintained.
Young Man Dies After Being Knocked Down by Bus
A 16 year old male was knocked down by a double decker bus while crossing Alexandra Parade on Tuesday 8th December 2009 around 6pm. He was badly injured and taken to nearby Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He was later transferred to Stobhill Hospital where he died on Wednesday 9th December 2009. The driver was uninjured but badly shaken from the experience. Police are continuing enquiries and ask that witnesses contact Sergeant Karen Chisholm at Glasgow Road Policing Department on telephone number 0141 532 6400.

Man Attacked Walking his Dog
A 43 year old man was attacked whilst walking his Staffordshire pup Molly along Roslea Drive in Dennistoun at around 2.30pm on Monday 2nd November 2009. The attacker tried to hit the dog with a metal bar but struck the owner on the wrist while he was trying to protect his pet. He went to Glasgow royal Infirmary and is undergoing surgery for tendon damage.
The suspect is described as an Asian male, aged 20-21, approximately 5ft 8" tall, slim build, short dark hair, wearing a dark top and dark trousers. Detective Sergeant Aileen Boyle said: "This appears to be a completely unprovoked attack, and it is extremely worrying as to what has caused this man to act in this manner". Police are appealing for witnesses to contact 0141 532 4636.
Attempted Murder at Cathedral Square
A 38 year old man sustained a serious abdominal injury after an altercation with two men in the gardens of Cathedral Square and Castle Street at around 2pm on Monday 2nd November 2009. The man was taken to Glasgow royal infirmary where his condition was described as critical. Police are appealing for witnesses to contact 0141 532 3036.
Elderly Man Seriously Injured Crossing Alexandra Parade
A 79 year old man was knocked down near to Whitehill Street by a white Nissan Micra on Saturday at around 5.20pm 31 October 2009. An ambulance took him to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he was said to be "serious but stable". The woman driver of the car was uninjured. Police are appealing for witnesses to contact 0141 532 6400.

Market Gallery would like to invite applications from artists (working alone or collaboratively) for Studio Projects 20 & 21 - January/February 2010. Market Studio Projects have been developed to offer an opportunity to support the practice of artist and artists collectives. The successful applicants will have 24-hour access to one of the gallery's shop fronted spaces to use as a studio and exhibition space. The studio residency will last a total of 5 weeks followed by a four-week exhibition. Artists will be expected to treat market gallery spaces as an open studio, allowing progress to be visible and also encouraging interaction. market is committed to providing local and international emerging artists with a unique and supportive environment in which the selected artists can develop and push the boundaries of their artistic practice in a completely safe / nurturing space.

City Commemorates Life of Dennistoun Poet
William Miller, who lived most of his life at 4 Ark Lane Dennistoun, was recently acknowledged for writing the popular childrens nursery rhyme "Wee Willie Winkie" with a bronze memorial plaque. The plaque is mounted on the wall of the Wellpark Brewery near where his house once stood and it was unveiled by Glasgow Lord Provost Bob Winter on the 2nd September 2009.
Miller was born in Glasgow in 1810. He was a wood turner and cabinet maker by profession and he first published the poem in 1842 as part of a collection, Whistle-Binkie: Stories for the Fireside. In 1863 his book "Scottish Nursery Songs and other Poems" was published. It was a collection of his own poems, including "Wee Willie Winkie". He died in Glasgow 1872 and was buried in the family plot at Tollcross. A public subscription erected a monument to his name in the Glasgow Necropolis.
Great Scottish Run 2009
Supported by Lloyds TSB and Bank of Scotland the annual weekend run event is designed with everyone in mind. Beginning on Saturday 5th September with the Junior 3k and 1.5k road races for ages 9-17 and continued on Sunday the 6th with the 10k and half-marathon for adults. The 10k started from George Square at 9.30am in Glasgow's city centre with the half-marathon starting an hour later.
The run took them over the Kingston Bridge, normally not used by pedestrians, on their way to the finishing line in Glasgow Green. Over 19,000 people took part in Scotland's largest mass participation sporting event. People of all ages, shapes and sizes raised money for charity while participating in the run as part of their fitness regime, to beat their previous time, or simply for the fun and the challenge.
Family and friends join the spectators lined around the course providing cheers of encouragement to help the runners on their way. Entertainers and bagpipe players marked the stages along the route with a well deserved award to be collected in Glasgow Green when they finish.

Tennent's Acquisition by Magners Cider Company
C&C Group, the Dublin based company behind Magners cider, has entered into a conditional agreement to acquire the Irish, Northern Irish and Scottish businesses of Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI) for £180m. This includes the Wellpark Brewery in Dennistoun where Tennent's lager is produced and the distribution rights to Stella Artois, Beck's, Hoegaarden, Leffe and Budweiser.
John Dunsmore, chief executive of the C&C Group said: "Tennent's is a celebrated brand and is a compelling strategic fit for the group to develop alongside Magners in Scotland and Northern Ireland. This is a great opportunity to strengthen our route to market and broaden our product portfolio by combining our cider brands with some of the world's leading beer brands."
Tennent's is Scotland's leading lager brand and provides 55% of lager sales by volume to the Scottish licenced bar trade and 30% to the off-licenced trade. The Wellpark Brewery has been producing lager since 1885. The 300 staff will transfer to the C&C Group. Tennent's Super and Pilsner lager are not part of the deal and remain with ABI.

Dennistoun Community Youth Project
The DCYP Outreach team are on the streets of Dennistoun 5 nights and one afternoon a week to encourage young people to take part in various leisure and educational activities in the area and to be a source for information so the young people can make informed choices. The afternoon session allows the outreach staff to go into the schools and let the young people know what opportunities are available to them in the area. Dennistoun Treasure Hunt and Wild Goose Chase
There was a great turnout for two unique events held in Dennistoun during the middle of May. A 'Treasure Hunt', challenged every local primary age child to take part and spot the "wrong" items in local shop windows. Over 200 primary school children took part, and several completely correct answer sheets were submitted from each school. The Treasure Hunt winners each received a £50 game voucher:

P3B at Alexandra Parade won the prize for most entries from a single class. Each of the children in that class won a strawberry tart courtesy of James Allan Bakers.
The other event was the inaugural 'Wild Goose Chase'. With free entry, it was open to all-comers and featured exciting games and fun challenges with arty, sporty and sideshow themes, in various venues throughout Dennistoun. Local teams competed for a specially commissioned trophy and prizes of local meals out, plus other treats and gifts. The teams started with a round of fantastic fun fair sideshow games at Dennistoun New Church Hall. The route then continued via the Reidvale Adventure Playground with a silly sports session. A quirky quick quiz at Dennistoun Library followed before finishing with some amazing arty activities at the Parade Artists Spring Show at WASPS artists' studios on Hanson Street. In addition, a series of questions tested the teams' powers of observation en-route, with a cunning quest to uncover the details of Dennistoun's hidden surroundings and a further chance to add to the points total. With aching limbs, but smiles on their faces, all entrants said they'd had a great day and would be back for more next year. The Goose Chase winners were: 1st: 'Chick Flicks', 2nd: '3 Wise Monkeys', 3rd: 'Team Thomson', 4th: 'Doyles & Harringtons'. Spot The Goose: 'The Interpreters'.

Great Eastern Hotel Wall Collapse
Work continues in Duke Street to shore up the side of the Great Eastern Hotel building. Roads have been closed to pedestrians and vehicles for safety. Road restrictions are in place and traffic diverted from Duke Street between High Street and Bellgrove. John Knox Street closed and Wishart Street also closed to Duke street. Milnbank Housing Association has received a grant from Big Lottery and GCC of nearly £900,000 to help build a community owned nursery facility as part of the regeneration of the building.
Corgi Replaced by Gas Safe Register
The Corgi registration system for gas engineers has been replaced. As from 1st April 2009 anyone working on approved gas work must be on the Gas Safe Register. This takes immediate effect and you are advised to ask for their ID card and check the licence number for validity on the new website at www.gassaferegister.co.uk

The local advice centre that provides information on money, legal and consumer matters in Whitevale Street is closing in May due to lack of funding.

Glasgow Family Firm Invests £2Million in New Dental Lab Technology
Dental Technology Services (DTS), Scotland's largest full service dental laboratory, is the first firm in the UK to have an oral scanner which takes pictures inside your mouth. The 3M ESPE Lava Chairside Oral Scanner will take away the need for the rather uncomfortable traditional process dentists have used to take an impression of your teeth, for restoration purposes. It means that dentists will be able to email the images direct to the lab for crowns and bridges to be made more accurately and using new materials.
And DTS's new digital dental laboratory in Annefield Place, Dennistoun is the first of its kind in Europe to bring together cutting edge dental scanning, rapid prototyping of the mouth and computer aided milling techniques to make ceramic teeth from Zirconia. The oral scanner is the last piece of the jigsaw and the new laboratory allows the complete digital dental workflow. The Littlejohn family which owns and runs the business, has personally invested over £2million in the development of this new facility.
Says Graham Littlejohn, director, and grandson of DTS founder: "Our new technology, uses the latest oral scanner to take a digital image of inside the mouth, and finishes up with a new tooth, crown or bridge manufactured from Zirconia, which will totally change the state of the dental profession in years to come."
DTS has placed its self in a unique position by researching and testing new techniques from round the world and using their expertise in dentistry to bring them together. The Oral scanner will go on sale to dentists in the UK from May 2009.
DTS was founded in the east end of Glasgow in 1943 and is still run by the same family who founded it. The company has branches in Ireland, London and Scandinavia. DTS has grown to be the largest outsourcing centre in the UK, and currently manufactures state of the art crowns, bridges and false teeth for over 300 laboratories across the UK as well as thousands of dentist clients.

Gearing up for National Spring Clean
Providing those who are annoyed by litter with the opportunity to head out into the fresh air and make a difference, National Spring Clean 2009 is set to be the biggest and best yet - and Keep Scotland Beautiful is now launching a major volunteer recruitment drive.
The annual month-long blitz on the litter that blights our streets, parks, riversides and beaches is quickly approaching and Keep Scotland Beautiful is looking for people to restore their sense of community pride and clean up their neighbourhoods for themselves and visitors to our country.
Last year 20,000 volunteers took part in clean up events during the month of April, gathering enough black bags of litter to line the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, from the castle esplanade to the Scottish Parliament, 12 times over.
Many groups already take part in voluntary clean ups during the year, but National Spring Clean provides an opportunity for schools, youth clubs, voluntary groups, communities, businesses and individuals to play an important part in a bigger, coordinated campaign. It is an ideal occasion for anyone who cares about their local environment to take action.
Cabinet Secretary for the Environment Richard Lochhead said: "Litter continues to be a blight on many communities across Scotland and it is absolutely vital that we all do our bit to tackle this unsightly problem. With 2009 being the year of Homecoming, this is the perfect opportunity to make a difference as part of the National Spring Clean and ensure Scotland has a worldwide reputation for being a clean and tidy country."
Chief Executive of KSB, John Summers OBE said, "It's so easy to get involved in National Spring Clean 2009; all people have to do is find a location near them that they feel could do with a litter clean, choose a date in April and then register their event online at www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/springclean".
The new look National Spring Clean 2009 website is now live, allowing volunteers to view the online map showing all the organised events. Information about litter and how schools, community groups and businesses can get involved is provided, along with case studies, organiser check lists, information about fundraising and publicity and also downloadable template posters and participant certificates.
"Not only does a spring clean event pull communities together, remove litter and improve the local environment, it can also be great fun to get involved in an exciting free outdoor challenge as the weather improves. And with this year being "Homecoming" we also want to showcase Scotland at its best." added Mr Summers.
