Did you know that our furry friends can catch lungworm (Angiostrongylus Vasorum) from eating slugs and snails? 

They can actually become infected by sniffing or licking it from the slug and snail trails as well. These may be on toys/ water bowls and grass. This means, unfortunately,  Even if your dog doesn’t eat snails and slugs, they can still become infected!

• Coughing
• Difficulty breathing
• Problems exercising / tiredness
• Bleeding or bruising more
• Going off food/ vomiting

If you see any of these signs and are suspicious of lungworm, please come and see us. We can thoroughly examine your pet, do a blood test  if we are suspicious and give treatment if needed.

There have been 47 reported cases of lungworm within a 50 mile radius of Glasgow! The real figure could be much higher as not all cases are diagnosed and reported.

Lung worm can be fatal!

The good news is that prevention is relatively simple. Monthly worming regimes with specially licensed products treat infections before they cause problems. They are prescription only medications that need to be prescribed by your vet.

Cats aren’t getting away with it that easily

Lungworm in cats is a little different. It actually lives in the lung tissue and it’s got a different complicated latin name: Aelurostrongylus Abstrusus.  Cats aren't as excited about eating slugs as dogs are…. So they inconveniently, can catch it from hunting birds and mice too. This is why its super important to keep your feline friends up to date with their worming as well.
